This past Easter weekend, I had what can only be described as a genuine privilege: the chance to fish Reekie Lyn.
Recent rains had the river in a mood. Angry flows, and carrying that stained discolouration that tells you straight away that this isn’t going to be a gentle day out. Conditions were, in a word, testing.
Despite challenging conditions, the fishing was exceptional.
Fish came to the net in generous numbers, beautiful conditioned brown trout. It’s always satisfying when tough conditions don’t translate to poor fishing, but rather to more interesting fishing.
Two things stood out to me in particular:
1. A notable absence of small fish
There was a striking lack of juveniles. The average size sat comfortably at 24 cm and above.
2. Empty pockets
Classic pocket water, those inviting, oxygen-rich slots that usually scream “trout live here”, were eerily unproductive. Especially in the lower sections.
Feeding behaviour leaned heavily subsurface. Fish were holding in challenging water and were being very selective when it came to fly patterns. Over two days, only two fish rose to a dry fly.
Among the highlights were two fish over 55 cm, more than enough to cement the trip in memory.
Reekie Lyn is a special piece of water.

AmaHlubi / Hulamin / NFFC Schools Project
The Natal Fly Fishers Club, in collaboration with the AmaHlubi community and leveraging its longstanding relationship with the Bushmans River, successfully facilitated a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative in partnership with Hulamin.
As part of this program, Hulamin provided complete school uniforms to learners at the Ncibidwane Primary School. The initiative commenced in 2025, during which 20 learners received full uniforms. On Monday 2nd March, the project advanced into its second phase, equipping an additional 43 learners with school attire. Consequently, all students at the school are now appropriately outfitted.

Representatives in attendance included:
NFFC: Wayne Stegen (Vice Chair)
AmaHlubi: Michael Mtshali
Hulamin: Roxanne Stegen (Procurement Head), Donald Nkadimeng (Corporate Social Investment Manager), and Zinhle Gwamanda (CSI Coordinator).

This undertaking has further strengthened the Club’s rapport with the local community and reflects positively on the sustained partnership among all parties involved. Moreover, it consolidates the stability of our agreement and ensures continued access to the waters owned by the AmaHlubi community.

We express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed their time and effort to support and ensure the successful implementation of this initiative. Special thanks are extended to Roxanne Stegen for her pivotal role as the originator of this noteworthy project.

The Natal Fly Fishers Club hosted their annual youth clinic this past Saturday — and for the first time, we were excited to include the ladies alongside our youth anglers!

We had an amazing turnout, and loads of learning was had! Thank you to everyone who joined us, and a huge shout-out to the NFFC committee for organising the day and so generously sharing your time, knowledge and skills.

We’re already looking forward to the next one!
