Departed from the shores of Portugal with his Mother and 3 brothers upon a cargo ship, the young man embarked upon the African continent briefly. Leaving Africa they traveled still by sea via Amsterdam into the Scandinavian countries eventually docking in Stockholm Sweden. From that day on at the tender age of 9yrs Gil Andre Viegas Fernandes was intuitively in love with vessels upon the waters. By
the age of 12yrs Gil had his first wooden boat, powered by a Monark 8 h/p out-board motor which he used to visit the many forested Islands in the Swedish waters. The family following their professional bar-tending Portuguese father, flew to Southern Africa, eventually to Duran where Gil now 19yrs old managed a well know Durban boat workshop. Shortly after that GILCRAFT was created in 1972, Stanger street, Durban some 39 years ago and still running strong. In this time Gil has mastered the understanding of all the makes of out-board motors:- including the SEAGULL, a war time out-board motor designed by the mother of all creation, a" woman." Gil now continues his passion on the ever popular computerized, green, water friendly Evinrude out-board motors. His extensive knowledge of water dynamics saw him win the 1991 F3 internation powerboat race putting in the ranks of South African Power Boat Springbok. He has race prepped the South African Inflatable champions, non other that Gordon and Donovan Butler, the current SA SpringBoks. To date Gil is the technical adviser for SIBIA in the category of inflatable boats and serves in the executive committee for inflatable racing. Gil indulges his passion in the boating business in KZ Natal, at 45 Pentrich road Pietermaritzburg. Email [email protected]
