Remember when a Saturday morning felt like an adventure?

And somehow you'd arrive home hours later with a story.

Funny how growing up works.

We spend our childhood wanting freedom.

Then we spend our adulthood scheduling it.

That's why so many people love trail running.

Not because they're chasing medals.

Because for a couple of hours they get to feel like explorers again.

At Zevenwacht, the vineyards replace the neighbourhood streets.
The trails replace the shortcuts through the bushes.
And the stories are still waiting to be found.

Around 400 runners joined us at Neethlingshof today for our Youth Day TrailFun event.

For many people, today was their very first trail run.

First trail runs are scary.

There is always that little voice before the start that asks:
“Can I actually do this?”

And yet this morning, hundreds of people showed up anyway.

They climbed hills they were unsure about.
They pushed through tired legs.
They walked when they needed to.
They kept going.
They finished.

That takes courage.

At TrailFun, we don’t reward speed.
We reward courage.

And very often, the second trail run is the one where people begin to realise:
“I actually belong here.”

Thank you to every single person who spent their Youth Day with us today.

ROUTE MARKING DAY 🏃‍♂️🍃

Today we marked the routes for Tuesday’s Youth Day Holiday Series at Neethlingshof Wine Estate.

And honestly?

This route is going to surprise people.

🍃 5km Runners

This will sound harder than it actually is.

You begin with a gentle uphill of just under 1km. Don’t stress about this at all. It’s marked run/walk and the secret is simply to start slowly and save your energy for the beautiful downhill sections later.

Once you reach the Aid Station near the rondavel, take a second and look around. The views are spectacular.

From there it’s mostly flowing downhill all the way home… except for the “worst hill” near the pine trees.

(It’s not actually a hill. We’re just being dramatic.)

The route is slightly longer than 5km, closer to 6km, so take your time and enjoy it.

🍃 10km Runners

You head out in the opposite direction to the 5km runners.

Down through the lower part of the farm, zig-zagging through vineyards and along beautiful fynbos contour trails.

At one point you’ll see a massive hill ahead and briefly question your life choices.

Good news:
We decided not to send you up that one.

Instead you turn right, climb a smaller hill and head into the forest before eventually joining the 5km runners at the Aid Station for the journey home.

Except for the “worst hill”, of course.

🍃 Seasoned Runners

Be careful not to go out too hard.

The gentle downhill start may tempt you into running faster than you should. Save your legs for the climbs through the vineyards and forest sections.

Once you reach the power pylons, that’s when the real racing starts.

Enjoy it.

This is an absolutely beautiful route.

Run.
Walk.
Jog.
Push a pram.
Take photos.
Catch your breath at the viewpoints.

This is your day.

Important Venue Update – Youth Day Run

Due to an unexpected livestock biosecurity issue at Middelvlei Wine Estate linked to the current foot-and-mouth outbreak affecting cattle in South Africa, we have unfortunately had to move Tuesday’s Youth Day TrailFun event to an alternative venue.

The event will now take place at Neethlingshof Wine Estate.

All entries remain valid and the event will continue as planned with the same distances, medals, socks and overall event format.

We would like to thank Neethlingshof and Stellenbosch Municipality for accommodating us at very short notice and thank all of you for your patience and understanding while we worked through the situation this afternoon.

Updated venue details and parking information will be sent to entrants before the event.

Sometimes the biggest win is simply not talking yourself out of coming.

That’s how a lot of TrailFun journeys begin.

One public holiday.

They remember the morning they discovered they were capable of more than they expected.

This Youth Day at Middelvlei isn’t about being elite.

It’s about collecting small victories that quietly change how you see yourself.

Please don't come to Middelvlei if you're hoping to look impressive.

You may need to walk uphill.

Your legs might complain.

Your shoes definitely won't stay clean.

And there's a strong possibility you'll spend the rest of Youth Day wondering why you don't do this more often.

That’s the strange thing about trail running.

Most beginners arrive worried about pace, fitness and whether they’ll keep up.

Then somewhere between the vineyards and the finish line, they realise nobody actually cares.

People are too busy encouraging each other, laughing at the hills and enjoying being outside.

This isn't school sport.
Nobody gets picked last here.
