Yesterday, through a dance teacher’s group, we received the heartbreaking news that the legendary Roy Wallisch from Balletique in Sea Point, had passed away the night before.
It hit differently.
Not only because Roy was such an icon, but because many of us had recently rallied behind his Back-a-Buddy campaign, trying to raise funds to help him through what had become an incredibly difficult financial chapter.
And I can’t help but wonder… was it simply not enough?
There is something deeply uncomfortable about watching someone who gave so much to the world struggle so profoundly in return.
I’m so sorry, Roy, that the world let you down.
You deserved better.
So today, I’m sharing this brilliant Butch Le Butch remix of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 — a song that has always been about the grind, the struggle, the system, and the people caught inside it.
Perhaps this one, with a touch of Disco is for Roy.
For the artists.
For the teachers.
For the dancers.
For the creatives.
For everyone who spends a lifetime giving their gifts to others while quietly trying to keep their own heads above water.
May we become better at looking after the people who have spent their lives making this world a little more beautiful.
Rest well, Roy. Your legacy lives on. 🖤
