Private Lessons vs Group Lessons?

The above question is most definitely the most frequently asked question by parents who want to enrol their children for swimming lessons.

I have been training children for 17 years and between myself, Lynette Emslie and Sanmarie Neethling we have almost 70 years’ experience in this field.

The answer to the question above is unique to a child’s needs and character. It should be axiomatic that the decision usually primarily boils down to the cost implication of private lessons, but there is much more to consider.

The benefits of Group Lessons:

1. Lessons are less expensive

2. For confident children, group lessons can be a great socializing experience.

3. We have seen the benefits of children learning from their peers.

4. It reduces the risk of boredom which will keep your child engaged for much longer, of which
the benefits should be self-explanatory.

5. To see your peers and trying to emulate the skills that they work on is great for visual
learning

6. It is not all about swimming. Group lessons learn important skills to children such as focus,
following instructions, patience, and acceptance.

7. Group lessons also provide for a healthy competition environment which encourages them to
work harder and to improve their endurance and speed.

Most importantly, trust your child’s swimming instructor, tell them if your child previously had any bad experiences in the pool as this had had might be one of the reasons why the child may be struggling to get comfortable in this environment.

Make sure you have an open relationship with the instructor – feel free to speak up if something is bothering you.

Your child needs to enjoy the lessons and they need to have fun.

Teach them to love the water and the rest will follow naturally!

We have trained many champions, but we have trained more swimmers that love swimming without being a champion.
