EDEN District Sport Academy

EDEN District Sport Academy This academy is a project of the Department of Culture Affairs and Sport. Purpose: Identify and develop young athletes for High Performance sports.

The purpose of this page is purely to convey information to athletes, coaches, administrators, officials and other sporting participants which relates to the academy. The academy was officially launched in January 2013. A massive talent identification process occurred whereby athletes from a range of sporting codes were selected. The academy is currently working with eight SWD (soon to be EDEN) sp

orts codes. They are as follows:

Aquatics, Athletics, Baseball, Boxing, Cycling, Netball, Soccer and Table Tennis. The age group specification: 13 - 18 years of age

Athletes are encouraged to train and perform optimally in competitions so that they may advance from district level to provincial to national, and ultimately, international level. The academy will also work to promote coaches within sports hence mentoring and developing future coaches.

His not just a mentor or a colleague or a DCAS staff member his so much more for the community of sport.. Andre Alexander we salute you for everything you do...

ANDRE Alexander of Spes Bona High School was a multi-talented sportsman who excelled in the three sporting codes at provincial and national level: athletics, baseball, and football.

He also played professional football for the Heideveld-based Santos in the Federational Professional League.

He was in the 1988 Sacos team for baseball and football – the highest level in the sport at the time (amateur).

He was a high-calibre sprinter in 1980, 1981 and 1982 at senior schools level. It was only his love for baseball, another summer sport, that kept him away from the track in subsequent years. Here he is seen doing high jump at his school's inter-house meeting at the Athlone Stadium which, on the eye, looks pretty decent.

Alexander's sporting career was out of the ordinary. You might want to read all about it here: http://bit.ly/2f1ZfEa

There are more 'Alexanders' in our communities who need the opportunity to compete at the highest level and on the international stage. In Athlone, Cape Town, there is no longer a track and field club, unless I am gravely mistaken. It is easier to find a road running club, a feature of athletics that has mushroomed over the past 15 years in the area.

THE LETTER BELOW FROM A MEMBER OF RHEENENDAL SAYING THANK YOU FOR THE DONATION FROM THE EDEN ACADEMY BASEBALL ATHLETES THAT DONATED THEIR NUTRITION PACKS TO THE PEOPLE OF RHEENENDAL AFTER THE FIRES.

Words sometimes just cannot express one's appreciation completely. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank the BASEBALL athletes, Coaches and Eden Academy for this generous and wonderful donation to the very special people of Rheenendal.

Please allow me to just give you some background.

The fires that ravaged our beautiful district started a couple of kilometers north-east of Rheenendal. It was fueled and accelerated by a 90km/h berg-wind that blew in the direction of Rheenendal. With the fierce wind propelling this monster, it spread faster that we could think. The next thing we knew we were cut off from any help and escape with a raging fire on our doorstep. Our community of farmers, farm workers, wives and children fought for 7 days and 6 nights these fires by ourselves with our own resources, shoulder against shoulder, protecting each others livestock, families and homes. We only lost one home in this whole process, if it was not for the fearless community of Rheenendal, I am convinced it would have been much worse.
By day 7 the SANDF helicopters came to help and the fires were finally beaten, and we could all get some sleep and get back to daily life and work. These people of Rheenendal did not hesitate, question or argue, they were unwavering and entirely focussed on beating this formidable fire, as you see.....we could not evacuate.....we were trapped by the fire.

I have attached some photo's and video's of your two athletes handing your generous donation over to the community of Rheenendal.

They each said a few words and had the whole crowd hanging on their lips. They are such examples of how an athlete should carry themselves. They stood proud and commanded the proceedings. Truly remarkable young men.

Thank you again, this will definitely not be forgotten soon.
