In view of the civil unrest and general uncertainty right now, I’d just like to offer a word of encouragement if I may.
The feelings many people are experiencing right now are exactly the same as the physical and emotional response to a physical fight.
It’s very easy for panic and fear to set in, to paralyze one’s thinking, and to cause people to act irrationally and on instinct.
The downside of this is that it also leads to poor decision making, emotional overwhelm, and physical health issues like stress, panic, reduced immunity, negative emotions, and so on.
We teach the “3 C’s” - Clear, Control, and Counter.
Right now, we have a wonderful opportunity to practice this. Remember that it is not what happens to you that affects you as much as your thoughts and fears about what “might” happen.
Guard your mind.
“Clear” by doing small practical things to keep yourself safe, without excessive panic (it’s just a process).
“Control” by controlling the things you can, and not stressing about the things you can’t control. Your mind is your greatest ally or your greatest enemy… you choose.
Finally, “Counter” by refusing to become part of the panic, and especially, by refusing to be part of so much cynical fear-mongering that is happening out there. We are not blind to the realities, but we are not consumed by them.
Think, speak, and act in ways that encourage, uplift, and inspire others, even if they’re in a place of pain or fear - because that is the very best thing you can do. By being boldly compassionate and helping to embolden and inspire others, we elevate our own understanding and command of life.
Renowned author Frank Herbert wrote: “I must not fear. Fear is the great mind-killer”.
Or, as my wonderful wife has said so often to me over the years: “Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Worrying is nothing more than negative goal-setting.”
Be encouraged today. Because courage - or being calm under fire - is exactly what we teach.
At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, a year and a half ago, I recorded a 5-minute video on dealing with a crisis the Krav Maga way. I believe it’s more relevant now than ever.
