This past weekend, Renshi Jp van Heerden and Sebastian had the privilege of attending the 32nd annual National Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Gasshuku at Gariep β a highlight on the calendar for senior Shorin-ryu students from across South Africa every year.
More than just a training camp, the gasshuku is a reminder of the incredible sense of community that exists within Shorin-ryu Shorinkan. Practitioners travel long distances from across the country to come together in the spirit of learning, growth, friendship, and mutual respect.
This year, we were once again honoured to learn from international guests Kyoshi Pat Hayley (USA), Kyoshi Steve Johnson (Mauritius), Renshi August Connolly (Ireland) and Kyoshi Sheldon Barnes (Australia), whose knowledge, insight and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance. A special word of appreciation also goes to Kyoshi Claude Johnson and the SA Shorin-ryu Board of Directors for the immense work that goes into making gatherings like this possible year after year.
One of the most meaningful messages shared over the weekend was the importance of the Shorin-ryu family circle β βochi waβ β and the responsibility we all share in preserving that closeness and connection within the style.
For younger students especially, weekends like these are a glimpse into the journey that lies ahead: years of consistent training, opportunities to learn from incredible teachers, friendships built through karate, and becoming part of something much bigger than oneself.
