North-West University Soccer Institute
'EXCELLENCE in soccer development'
Taking The Beautiful Game To A Higher Level
The NWU Soccer Institute is based at the university's Mafikeng campus and attracts students from across South Africa. The NSI incorporates Best of Breed expertise from South Africa and the rest of the world. Just as the Rugby Institute at North West University's Potchefstoom camp
us has produced several Super 14 players and Springboks over the years, the Soccer Institute is moulding the standout players, coaches and administrators. Three (3) players have represented us at the SA National u/20 & u/23 (Boalefa P**e, Sipho 'Nduna' Nyafoza & Luvolwethu 'Luvo' Mpeta) and recently one (1) has been called up in a training camp, Sipho 'Daizer' Mateis. Two (2) players are playing in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) currently, Andile 'Ace' Khumalo (Amazulu FC) & Boalefa P**e (Supersport Utd) and a number of players are featuring in the National First Division (NFD). The NWU Soccer Institute is currently the USSA Football champions having won on two ocassions, in 2009 and 2010. Vision
Develop a centre of excellence in soccer and use the power of soccer to make a step-change in education and socio-economic development. While the institute's main role is to develop soccer players, coaches and administrators, it has a much wider goal; to produce well rounded individuals who have completed a three year university curriculum, assimilated important life skills, and received mentoring along the way. Producing leaders not just football players
The aim therefore is not only to develop soccer players using the latest training methods, technology and science, but also to produce well rounded individuals who can play leadership roles in South African sport. Soccer careers can be short so it is important that our students have specific skills in other areas to fall back on. Four (4) Pillars of Player Development
We create leaders for the game and the business of soccer by developing the individual in four areas:
1. Development as a Professional Soccer Player
2. Academic Career Development
3. Life Skills Development
4. Mentorship & Leadership Development
Soccer ability needs to be matched by academic ability
Students who are accepted for the institute need to have considerable soccer ability and a New Senior Certificate (NSC) pass to ensure that they will be able to thrive in a dual environment of soccer development and academic study. Soccer Institute Holistic Development Model
We develop the game and players from grassroots to elite level.
>Elite player development
>Talent nuturing
>School soccer development
>Grassroots development
Building capacity at grassroots
As students at the institute are largely selected from poorer communities, it is fitting that giving back to the needy communities forms a crucial part of the institute's ethos. Giving back takes the form of coaching clinics, helping schools to form their own leagues and providing teachers with coaching and refeering instruction and using the game of soccer to provide a motivational training course for inmates at correctional facilities. Endorsement, support & partnerships
Endorsed and supported by the South African Football Association, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, The English FA, the English Premier League and FIFA. The Soccer Institute welcomes partners and support from individuals, clubs, companies and organizations who share a common purpose to make a step-change in sport development. Selection Criteria
Students are selected based ontheir soccer proficiency, academic accomplishment (minimum requirement being a National Senior Certificate) and their leadership qualities. Scholarships
Scholarships are available upon application and are subject to available, a proven track record and personal circumstances. Scholarships cover tuition fees and associated living costs.
