Kids this age need physical activity to lay the groundwork for their every day tasks and a healthy lifestyle. Guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services say that children and adolescents age 6 and older need at least an hour a day of physical activity. Most of the hour should be either moderate or vigorous aerobic activity. Sports like netball, tennis etc once or twice a week will not be enough to reach activity goals. Also, parents can no longer rely on physical education in schools to provide enough physical activity for kids. It's also OK if a child isn't interested in traditional sports, but it's important to find alternative ways to be active. Through physical activities, kids learn about sportsmanship, setting goals, meeting challenges, teamwork, patience and the value of exercising. Kids who enjoy sports and exercise tend to stay active throughout their lives. And staying fit can improve self-esteem, prevent obesity, and decrease the risk of serious illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease later in life. Active kids are happy kids. Please contact for more information.
