BACK HOME 🇿🇦 — UEFA B REFLECTION ⚽️

Back in South Africa, I’ve had some time to reflect on the UEFA B journey and everything I took away from the course.

One of the biggest lessons for me wasn’t just about tactics, sessions or the game model.

It was the value of having an instructor who becomes a mentor.

Someone who challenges your thinking, asks the right questions, gives honest feedback and encourages you to look at the game — and yourself as a coach — from a different perspective.

The course gave me knowledge, but the mentorship gave me a different way of thinking.

A good coach can teach you.
A great mentor can change the way you coach.

Grateful for the experience, the people, the challenges and the lessons.

DAY 6/10 — LEARNING BEYOND THE PITCH ⚽️🏟️

One of the best parts of this UEFA B journey has been the opportunity to learn by watching the game from a different perspective.

Today we took in three matches:

⚽️ Newcastle United vs Everton at Murrayfield
⚽️ Hearts vs Benfica at Tynecastle Park
⚽️ Hibernian vs Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup

Different teams. Different styles. Different challenges.

For a coach, every match is another classroom. 👀🧠

Watching the game live, analysing the details, observing how teams solve problems and simply enjoying the environment of Scottish football.

Sometimes the best learning happens when you sit back, watch and ask questions.

Another day. Another experience. Another lesson. 🇿🇦✈️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚽️

DAY 5/10 — ATTACKING IN WIDE AREAS ⚽️🔥

Back on the pitch for another practical session — this time working with a 4-3-3 and focusing on attacking in wide areas.

Creating width. Recognising space. Timing movements. Combining with teammates. And ultimately, finding ways to create and exploit opportunities in the final third.

Another session that challenged my understanding of how we can create problems for the opposition.

The detail is in the decisions. The quality is in the ex*****on. 🧠⚽️

Day 5 complete.
Still learning. Still growing. Still chasing the next level. 🇿🇦✈️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

DAY 4/10 — THE CLASSROOM 🧠⚽️

Not every lesson happens on the pitch.

Today was about stepping back and looking at the game from different perspectives — Laws of the Game, considerations within the Game Model, and the role of a part-time manager.

What I enjoyed most was being able to discuss, question and reflect on how these areas influence our decisions as coaches.

Another day of learning. Another opportunity to challenge my thinking.

The more I learn, the more I realise there is still to learn. 🇿🇦✈️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

DAY 3/10 — DEFENDING IN WIDE AREAS ⚽️🧠

Today we took the learning onto the pitch.

Working with a 4-2-3-1, our focus was defending in wide areas — understanding distances, timing, pressing, cover and how the whole team works together to protect the space.

Another practical session. Another opportunity to challenge my thinking and refine my coaching.

The details matter. The simplicity matters. The ex*****on matters.

Day 2 - SIMPLICITY IS GENIUS 🧠⚽️

Today’s biggest takeaway:

The best solutions aren’t always the most complicated ones.

As coaches, we can sometimes overthink the game, over-coach the players and look for complexity when the answer is right in front of us.

Today was a reminder to keep things simple, clear and purposeful.

Simplicity isn’t making coaching easier.
It’s making the message clearer.

Another day. Another lesson. Another step forward. 🇿🇦✈️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
