Several studies have highlighted the benefits of outdoor play. It has a significant impact reducing the symptoms of ADHD by raising dopamine and norepinephrine baseline levels in the brain.
An active kid is a healthy kid. Playing outside allows children with ADHD to move their bodies and express their liveliness in a more suitable setting. The gentle breeze of wind against the skin, the sound of trees swaying and leaves rustling can have a calming effect on them.

The swings, monkey bars, and jungle gyms help children improve coordination and maximize flexibility. And as we all know, all that activity brings better sleep – exactly what the doctor ordered!

Yes, when we think of OBEDIENCE, we always first think of dog obedience training!! Instilling this as a character trait in our children is of just as much importance - if not more!

I think that there are 4 aspects to OBEDIENCE that are vital. Our children need to learn to obey:
1. Immediately,
2. Cheerfully (it is all about attitude...)
3. Unconditionally
4. Thoroughly

These are integral to the idea of OBEDIENCE because if we do not instill them, I believe that later on we plant the seeds for rebellion. Of course obedience is NOT one sided - in order for us to be able to insist on obedience, we as parents need to be fair and reasonable in what we are requiring - and teach the principles gently and with patience.

Start with simple games like 'Simon says...' when they are young and take time to explain why obedience is SO important (e.g. you need to be able to listen to me because it may save your life if I see you in danger...) Army games are great especially for little boys to instill obedience - and of course, having their own pet that they need to teach obedience to is a real winner...

The Stanford Prison experiment is incredibly interesting...

I found a very interesting article in a Psychology Today magazine courtesy of Dr. Noam Shpancer. In the summer of 1971, a team of researchers led by psychology professor Phillips Zimbardo divided a group of undergraduates randomly into two groups, prisoners and prison guards, and arranged for them to act out their respective roles in a mock prison in the basement of the Stanford psychology building.

Within days, the guards began to display authoritarian attitudes, ultimately subjecting some of the prisoners to intentional humiliation. The prisoners developed passive attitudes, many sinking into a depressed state. The experiment had to be stopped after only six days.

The Stanford prison experiment is often said to illustrate the power of social roles in shaping behavior, but it also illustrates the power of behavior to elicit real powerful emotions. The guards in Zimbardo's experiments were not really guards. And the prisoners were not prisoners. They were all volunteers. They were all students. But once they began to act the part, they began to feel the part.

So, this leads me back to our memo for today. The moment we start ACTING like life is a blessing, it will start FEELING like one. Well, I'm in to give it a try today, are you?

It is a HUGE challenge to teach of children to firstly:
1. Recognise what we have been given (our bodies, our time, natural resources, talents, our minds, spirits and emotions etc.), and then,
2. To accept responsibility for developing these as well as use them appropriately.

STEWARDSHIP is often more 'caught' than 'taught'...

It is good for us to put some thought into how we look after ourselves and the world around us. A good way to do this is together decide with your child an exercise goal to keep our bodies fit and healthy and work towards that - encouraging each other when things get tough. If exercise is not your thing, take on a mind challenge to learn something new together (e.g. a language or a household maintenance plan). The idea is to develop oneself and persevere through the 'not so fun and easy' times.
