We often hear that movement is medicine...but when pain kicks in, the first thing we do is to stop moving!

The opposite is true and Joseph Pilates knew this when he said, "Change happens through movement and movement heals."

Pilates consists of a series of movements that aid in rediscovering your body's ability to get stronger, more capable, more flexible and decrease pain in the long run.

At Bodies in Motion Pilates, our physiotherapist instructors know how to apply the method to all body types and functional levels! Pilates will meet you where your body is.

Movement is indeed medicine and we know the dosage!

The piece below was written by Wilhelm Jordaan, the writer of the column "Van Alle Kante" in the Burger. He is a emeritus professor in Psychology and also a proud member of our pilates studio.

If you ever did a pilates class at Bodies In Motion Pilates, you will enjoy this so much!

He wrote:

Op gevorderde leeftyd reken mens jy ken jou lyf se ledemate (bodele, onderdele, swakhede) en jy kan hulle by die naam noem wat hulle gewoonlik het; ook die onnoembare troetelnaampies!
Verras is jy dus as jy hoor jy het ook vlerkies, ‘n stertjie en ‘n beltjie; en daar is ook lang en sagte nekke. Om alles te kroon, moet jy boonop ‘n perske onder jou ken kan hou; ‘n jellietot onder jou hak voel; en ‘n druiwekorrel iewers onder jou rug. Daarby moet jy, as jy dit en dat reg doen, ‘n koppie warm koffie op jou bors kan balanseer, of ‘n glas wyn op jou rug. Sonder dat jy, die koffie of die wyn, omval. Gedorie! Ek is mos nie ‘n gimnas of ‘n slangman, of van gomlastiek gemaak nie!
Waar hoor en beleef ek dié dinge? By twee opgeleide fisioterapeute (mooi vroue) hier in my kontrei wat my en my klasgenote laat visualiseer en oefen hoe om ons lywe (sommige soepel jonk, ander middeljarig stram en nog ander bejaarderig krakerig) slanker, beweegliker en fikser te laat word.
Dit alles te danke aan die Duitser Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) wat ‘n studie gemaak het van liggaamsbewegings eie aan yoga, gimnastiek, ballet, dans en verweerkunde (die “martial arts”). Daaruit het hy ‘n stel oefeninge ontwerp om die soepelheid en ewewig van die liggaam te bevorder. Met die bedoeling dat dit ook na ‘n gesonder gees sal deurwerk.
As kind was Pilates glo siekerig en tingerig en deur oefening het sy liggaam só verbeter dat hy later as ‘n model gebruik is vir sketse en tekeninge van die ideale anatomie. Hy het ook ‘n sportman geword wat presteer het as ‘n bokser, skiër en duiker én werk as sirkusakrobaat gekry het.
Só het ek my dan, vermaaklik, verbeel ek word die model vir die “ideale anatomie” van ‘n bejaarde man, ‘n soort van bewonderingswaardige “latter-day” Adonis (wat tegelyk ‘n glas wyn en ‘n warm koppie koffie op die bors kan balanseer!), én dat die werklike beltjie wat oor my werklike boepie span mettertyd ‘n werklike verstellinkie sal ondergaan…
Verby dié pret en spottery, terwyl ons so op ons oefenmatjies steun en kreun teen die laste van eie gewig, swaartekrag en “breinfloutes”, weet ek opnuut hoe belangrik oefening is om die idee van ‘n “gesonde liggaam huisves ‘n gesonde gees” waar te maak. Juis omdat die menslike gees, soos die liggaam, té broos, té weerloos, té wisselvallig is om immuun te wees teen al die lewensdinge wat kan seermaak en angs, pyn, verlies en lyding besorg.
Voorkoming en genesing daarvan kom nie altyd van “buite” deur pille nie, maar deur onontdekte kragte “binne” jou wat soos saadjies gereed lê om te ontkiem wanneer jy na heelheid verlang.
En jy moet ook vas glo die menslike gees is kragtiger as enige medisyne en dít moet gevoed word deur ordinêre dinge - werk, oefening, speel, lag, vriendskap en familiebande én die wete dat die lewe ‘n geskenk is wat jy elke dag moet oopmaak. Dit is die dinge wat saak maak, dinge wat ons dalk vergeet het…
