Love this..

🐴 A ranger on foot covers about ten kilometres of bush in a day. A ranger on a horse covers thirty.

That number is the whole argument. In game reserves across KwaZulu-Natal, the African Conservation Trust and Project Rhino run Horse Anti-Poaching Units, and the reasoning is beautifully practical. Three times the ground. A rider sits high enough to see over tall summer grass, which is exactly where a person on foot loses the landscape. And a horse moves quietly, so a patrol can get close to something without announcing itself the way an engine does.

The stakes are not abstract. South Africa lost almost nine thousand rhinos to poaching in a single decade.

Here is the part that stays with me: a patrol horse costs about eleven hundred dollars. Against helicopters, thermal drones and armed syndicates, one of the most effective tools in the field is an animal humans have been riding across open country for four thousand years.

Old technology. Still unbeaten on rough ground, in silence, before dawn.
