🌍 Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Recruitment Programme at Luthuli Museum 🎓

On 1 September 2026, the Luthuli Museum, in partnership with the US Consulate Durban, successfully hosted an information and recruitment programme for Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners.
The session welcomed learners and educators from local schools and provided valuable insight into the Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Programme, a prestigious 9-day academic and leadership programme that will be held in Rwanda in 2027, as well as the Online College Prep Workshop.

Participants gained valuable insights into the application process, academic opportunities, leadership development, and the many benefits of joining this internationally recognized programme.

The initiative targeted high-achieving Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners who demonstrate strong academic potential and leadership qualities, encouraging them to pursue global educational opportunities and prepare for future success. Interested learners were invited by the US Consulate Durban to apply for the two-week programme.

The Luthuli Museum extends its sincere appreciation to the US Consulate Durban, participating schools, educators, and learners for contributing to an inspiring and informative engagement.

📚⚖️In pursuit of academic excellence, many South African schools have transformed Saturdays into regular school days to provide learners with additional opportunities to improve their academic performance. Following this trend, the Luthuli Museum, in partnership with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Howard College School of Law, hosted a Moot Court Competition for high schools.
The competition provided learners with an opportunity to develop their legal knowledge, public-speaking abilities, critical thinking and courtroom skills. It also created an avenue for final-year UKZN law students to fulfil their community-service commitments by engaging with and mentoring high school learners.
Two schools participated in the competition. Nkosibomvu Secondary School with Bongimpilo Mntungwa and Ziphelele Maphumulo assuming the roles of applicants and Verulam with Ryan Pramlall and Abongwe Dlamini appearing on behalf of the respondents.
The proceedings were presided over by a distinguished panel of legal professionals, comprising Ma’am Memka, who previously served as a Judge of the Pietermaritzburg High Court; Ma’am Mthembu of Mthembu and Associates; and Advocate Zulu of the Durban Society of Advocates. Their expertise and guidance added significant value to the competition and provided learners with an authentic courtroom experience.
Verulam Secondary School emerged as the overall winner. The school’s Abongwe Dlamini was further recognised for her exceptional advocacy skills and was awarded the Best Oralist Award.
Abongwe also received a commitment letter from the UKZN Howard College School of Law. The university committed to contributing towards a portion of her tuition fees should she successfully complete matric, pursue a career in Law and enrol at the university. ⚖️📚✨

🌸 Empowering Women, Honouring a Legacy 🌸

On 13 August 2026, the Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Heritage Project, in partnership with the Luthuli Museum, proudly hosted the launch of the Blaauwbosch Women's Forum in Blaauwbosch, Newcastle. The event brought together women leaders, community members, heritage practitioners, and key stakeholders to celebrate Women's Month and commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women's March.

The launch marked an important milestone with the establishment of the Blaauwbosch Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Heritage Project Women's Forum, a dedicated platform aimed at empowering women and young girls through social, economic, cultural, and educational programmes. The Forum seeks to promote leadership, community development, heritage preservation, and social upliftment while advancing the values and principles championed by Chief Albert Luthuli.

A special tribute was also paid to Nokukhanya Luthuli, the wife of Chief Albert Luthuli, in recognition of her significant contribution to community development and her support for initiatives that uplifted women and families. Her legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role women have played, and continue to play, in advancing social justice and strengthening communities.

On 8 August 2026, the Luthuli Museum proudly hosted the Luthuli Kennedy Rated Chess Tournament, bringing together talented chess players, aspiring champions, and passionate enthusiasts for a day filled with strategy, skill, and healthy competition.

The tournament was held to commemorate and honour the historic meeting between Chief Albert Luthuli and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, celebrating the enduring values of leadership, human rights, and social justice championed by these two influential figures.

From carefully planned opening moves to exciting final checkmates, participants showcased critical thinking, concentration, discipline, and sportsmanship. The tournament not only highlighted the intellectual challenge of chess but also demonstrated the power of sport to unite people from diverse communities.

We look forward to welcoming even more chess enthusiasts to future tournaments at the Luthuli Museum!
