“The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
- Gandhi
If being “on the force” means a dog must spend 18 hours a day in a cage, potentially in the hands of someone with absolutely no empathy or regard for life, then TAKE THEM OUT OF SERVICE!
These dogs do not choose this life. They do not choose to run into danger like little soldiers. People train them to do it and then expect extraordinary loyalty, dedication and service from an animal who never had a choice.
They deserve to come home and simply BE DOGS. To experience a calm, safe life where they are loved, relaxed and part of a healthy functioning pack, not spending huge portions of their lives isolated and alone.
And Sky’s story did not necessarily begin with this horrific incident. Her severe separation anxiety and kennel stress were already signs of significant distress that should have warranted attention. Behaviour tells you so much when somebody actually bothers to pay attention.
The Guide Dog Association is a perfect example of how working dogs SHOULD be treated. A dog can have an incredibly important job while still being loved, protected, properly cared for and allowed to live as part of a family.
Working K9s should NEVER be treated as equipment. There should be regular, unannounced welfare inspections, veterinary checks and behavioural assessments.
If people are going to demand this level of loyalty, dedication and sacrifice from an animal, that loyalty should be returned tenfold.
If the system cannot guarantee their safety, dignity, companionship and quality of life, then it has absolutely NO RIGHT to ask for their service.
The rage and heartbreak I feel for Sky is indescribable.💔
ANOTHER SAPS FAILURE.
ANOTHER LIFE LOST.
JUSTICE FOR SKY!
Sky deserved better.
Sky was a police K9 who spent her life serving and working alongside the people she trusted. After her service ended, she should have been given the chance to live out the rest of her life in safety, comfort and dignity.
Instead, Sky suffered a tragic and devastating death after becoming severely injured while trying to escape her kennel.
What makes her story even harder to accept is that concerns about her welfare and her distress in confinement had reportedly already been documented.
Her death must not simply be forgotten.
We need answers.
We need accountability.
And most importantly, we need justice for Sky.
At Dogs Trust, we believe that every dog deserves compassion, dignity and protection — regardless of whether they are a family pet, a rescue dog or a working K9.
Sky gave her life in service. The very least she deserved was to be protected when she could no longer serve.
Run free, Sky. 🖤🐾
JUSTICE FOR SKY.
