🌊 TALK OF THE TOWN TUESDAY 🌊

Where are the humpback dolphins? 🐬

Join us on 16 June for an eye-opening evening with Dr Alejandra Vargas as we explore the lives of one of South Africa’s most endangered marine mammals β€” the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin.

With possibly fewer than 500 animals remaining nationwide, these elusive dolphins face increasing pressure from coastal development, boat traffic, pollution, and habitat change. Decades of research are beginning to reveal where they still occur, how they use our coastline, and what their future may hold.

πŸŽ‰β›΅ Closing Ceremony 2025/2026 β€” What a Season!
This year's Closing Cruise looked a little different β€” and we think it might just have been one to remember! 🌊
After severe weather left the Knysna Estuary carrying debris and muddy water from the river systems, we transformed our traditional Closing Cruise into a Closing Ceremony. Same values, same spirit, just with dry feet! πŸ‘Ÿ
The Walk Past on the KYC Causeway was a sight to behold β€” led proudly by the South African Sea Cadet Corps- TS Knysna, followed by the ever-colourful Seahorse Swimmers in full swimming gear (naturally! 🏊), with inshore and offshore sailors completing the procession. Turns out sailors move faster on land than on water β€” and after a spirited procession, we moved into the season's Prize Giving! πŸ†
The special awards went to:
πŸ₯‡ Junior Sailor of the Year (Lee Hawkins Trophy) β€” Owen Bronkhorst
πŸ₯‡ Woman Sailor of the Year (Gail Farmer Award) β€” Jessica Seath
πŸ₯‡ Master Sailor of the Year β€” Peter Vadas
πŸ₯‡ Laser Sailor of the Year β€” Drew Scott
πŸ₯‡ Finn Sailor of the Year β€” Yogi Divaris
πŸ† Overall Sailor of the Year β€” Yogi Divaris
⭐ Cadets Award β€” Diego Charleston
⭐ Commodore's Award β€” George January
Offshore awards went to:
πŸ₯‡ Most Offshore Victories β€” S/V Gemini
⭐ Lend a Hand Award β€” Leon van Niekerk
πŸ† Roger Clancy Award β€” On The Fly (Eska & Johan Claasen)
Then, with a gorgeous sunset as a backdrop, Tigger took to the deck and delivered an unforgettable evening of great music, good cheer, and more than a little dancing! πŸŽΈπŸ•ΊπŸŒ…
There is simply no better way to close out a season than with the incredible people we have at KYC! πŸ™Œ
To every member who competed, volunteered, crewed, cheered, and showed up this season β€” thank you. πŸ™Œ
A heartfelt thank you also to the incredible staff at KYC β€” the unsung heroes who keep our club running smoothly and our members smiling through every season. Your dedication, warmth, and hard work made this season the success it was, and it does not go unnoticed. πŸ™

πŸ†β›΅ Congratulations Yogi Divaris!
We are incredibly proud of our own Yogi Divaris for taking home gold in the ILCA7 class at the 2026 RSA ILCA National Championships, held at Club Mykonos in Langebaan from 1–3 May!
The regatta was a true test of skill and resilience β€” 55 sailors across all ILCA classes battled through blustery NW winds of 15–20 knots, choppy seas, and unpredictable swells over the first two days, before a windless Day 3 brought the event to a close.
Yogi's victory is made even more remarkable by the fact that it comes just one month after winning the Finn Nationals. An extraordinary achievement! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦
A big congratulations to all 55 competitors who showed incredible fortitude and grit on the water this weekend. πŸ‘
In Yogi's words: "It was tough, but very cool"

🌊 What a weekend on the water β€” and off it! β›΅
Knysna Yacht Club proudly hosted the 2026 Interclub Regatta on 25–26 April, welcoming sailors from GLYC, East London Yacht Club - South Africa, and Mossel Bay Sailing Club β€” 48 boats in total. The wind had other plans this weekend, but that didn't stop anyone from having an absolute blast!

Saturday gave us glassy conditions and a lengthy wait, but a small breath of wind gave the opportunity for racing to start. Sadly the wind dropped mid-way through the fast fleet race, resulting in a few boats needing a friendly tow back to shore. A brief breeze allowed the slow fleet to complete a race with 16 boats in close competition for the finish.
The evening more than made up for it β€” sailors and members gathered on our brand new deck, watched a gorgeous Knysna sunset, and celebrated late into the night with great entertainment from Shaza.

Sunday morning was breathtakingly beautiful β€” but again, the estuary had barely a breath of wind. Our racing committee didn't miss a beat, swapping sails for an on-shore tug-of-war and round-the-buoy paddle races. The junior sailors absolutely stole the show with their energy, laughter, and competitive spirit, which must have brought on the wind and allowed for 3 quick races to be completed.

In total, 4 races were sailed across the weekend.
πŸ… Individual Podiums:
- Cat Fleet: 1st Martin Fraser (KYC)
- Slow Fleet: 1st Arthur Watson (GLYC)
Β· 2nd Cameron Simpson (GLYC)
Β· 3rd Eli Kruger-Green (KYC)
- Fast Fleet: 1st Olivia Watton (GLYC)
Β· 2nd Luca Lutolf (KYC)
Β· 3rd Oliver Holden (MBSC)
πŸ† Fast Fleet Overall Club Winner: George Lakes Yacht Club
πŸ† Slow Fleet Overall Club Winner: Knysna Yacht Club

A massive shoutout to our incredible sponsors Ullman Sails South Africa who’s welcome packs, awesome prizes, good vibes, and on-the-water participation made the weekend extra special.

The best part? Over half the fleet were junior sailors! Our sailing school coaches and parents have put in tremendous dedication to prepare our aspiring sailors and we are truly grateful and proud of the phenomenal results. The future of Western Cape dinghy sailing is looking seriously bright. 🌟

Congratulations to George Lakes Yacht Club on the win β€” we'll see you all back in November at GLYC to defend the title! πŸ‘Šβ›΅
