Menโ€™s Mental Health Matters

A message from Student Support Services โ€“ Vuselela TVET College

Dear Students,

Student Support Services at Vuselela TVET College would like to remind all students, especially young men, that mental health matters. Many students silently face stress, anxiety, depression, emotional pressure, academic challenges, and personal struggles every day.

As young men, society often teaches us to hide our emotions and carry burdens alone. However, there is strength in speaking up, asking for help, and supporting one another.

Your well-being is important. Taking care of your mental health is not weakness โ€” it is part of growth, healing, and becoming the best version of yourself.

Student Support Services is here to provide support, guidance, counselling, and a safe space for students who may need someone to talk to. You are never alone.

Let us continue to build a supportive and caring campus community where every student feels heard, valued, and supported.

Speak up. Reach out. You matter.

ARPL Capacity Building Workshop Held at Vuselela TVET College

Mr. Owen Thomas Francis hosted an ARPL (Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning) Capacity Building Workshop at Vuselela TVET College in Jouberton cumpus on 08 June 2026. The workshop was attended by representatives from various institutions and stakeholders involved in artisan development, training, and skills recognition.

The workshop provided valuable insight into the ARPL programme and its role in recognising the skills and experience of individuals who have acquired trade-related knowledge through workplace experience rather than formal training. Participants were taken through the history of artisan recognition and the transition from the Section 28 system to the current ARPL model.

A key focus of the workshop was why ARPL is regarded as the best model for artisan recognition. Unlike previous systems, ARPL involves Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the screening and assessment process, ensuring that candidates are evaluated fairly and according to industry standards. SMEs are responsible for verifying service letters, assessing candidates' competencies, and marking assessment scripts. The model also uses multiple assessment papers per trade and conducts thorough evaluations to ensure that only suitable candidates are selected for trade testing. These measures contribute to greater credibility, transparency, and quality assurance within the artisan recognition process.

The workshop also highlighted the ARPL application process and admission requirements. Individuals wishing to apply for ARPL must do so through a QCTO-accredited Trade Test Centre and meet the minimum requirements, which include being at least 19 years old and having a minimum of three years of relevant workplace experience in a particular trade. Applicants do not require formal qualifications but must be able to read, write, and perform trade-related calculations where necessary. The programme is open to individuals working in both formal and informal sectors, provided they are not currently contracted apprentices.

The session reinforced the importance of ARPL as a pathway for experienced artisans to gain formal recognition of their skills and improve their opportunities for career growth and professional development.
