𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 | 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗣 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

The future of South Africa’s wildlife economy depends on more than policy and regulation. It requires meaningful engagement, shared responsibility, sound practice, and the participation of the people who are directly connected to the sector.

SABHSSA 2026 Best Practice Workshop created a platform for stakeholders to engage on matters that are central to the future of the wildlife economy, including compliance, responsible resource use, sustainable use, transformation, and stakeholder collaboration.

Held on 7 August 2026 at SANParks Head Office, the workshop was convened by SABHSSA in partnership with Stellenbosch University’s African Wildlife Economy Institute (AWEI).

These reflections capture key discussions and considerations emerging from the workshop, while highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and practical collaboration across the sector.

𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦: 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗗 𝗥𝗜𝗙𝗟𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 & 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗧.

As part of SABHSSA’s mandate to advance capacity development, professional standards and transformation within the wildlife economy, the association successfully delivered its first Advanced R***e Handling (ARH) and Approaching Potentially Dangerous Game on Foot (APDG) Short Course for qualified Professional hunters.

This programme was designed to move beyond theory by providing practical, field-based skills development that strengthens professional competence, safety and confidence in demanding hunting environments.

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲:

10 Professional hunters participated in the programme.

4 Female | 6 Male

1 participant was a SABHSSA member in good standing, while the remaining participants joined from the broader professional hunting and wildlife sector.

All participants are qualified Professional hunters holding valid PH permits for their respective provinces, with the cohort representing diverse backgrounds within the sector.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀:

• Advanced r***e handling and fi***rm safety
• Practical field skills and decision-making
• Approaching potentially dangerous game on foot
• Reading tracks, signs and animal behaviour
• Building confidence and professional competence
• Skills transfer and transformation within the hunting profession

Statement from the Acting CEO:

“This cohort represents community development in practice. By providing targeted, credible short courses, SABHSSA is ensuring that transformation is not just a policy, but a tangible outcome. We are building a safer, more skilled, and more representative professional hunting sector for South Africa.”

For SABHSSA, skills development is not simply about completing a course. It is about creating meaningful opportunities for professional growth, strengthening standards, transferring practical knowledge and contributing to a more inclusive and capable wildlife economy.

Without a doubt, Advanced R***e Handling (ARH), was a standout highlight of the course.

For our participants, it was more than fi***rms proficiency, it was about developing the technical competence, discipline, confidence and decision-making required of professional hunters operating in demanding field environments.

Through practical, hands-on training, participants strengthened the skills that underpin safe, responsible and professional hunting practices.

This is what meaningful skills development looks like: building capability, raising professional standards and preparing the next generation of African professional hunters for the realities of the field.

🎯 We are proud to host the first cohort of emerging professional hunters at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) for the Advanced R***e Handling & Approaching Potentially Dangerous Game on Foot Short Course.

This is more than a training programme. It is an investment in skills, professional development and meaningful participation within South Africa’s hunting and wildlife sector.

🤠 As these professionals step into the field to sharpen their knowledge, technical abilities and confidence, we are reminded that transformation is not only about opening doors — it is about equipping people to walk through them.

We are proud to announce that the Executive Consultant, Mr. Frans Malebane, was invited as a guest speaker at the 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗦𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗔) Workshop, hosted by the 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗗𝗗𝗣𝗠) at the University of Limpopo.

🤠 In support of the engagement was our distinguished 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗘𝗢, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗲.

As an alumni of the department, Mr. Malebane reflected on his career journey and shared valuable insights into the connections between 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆.

💡A key focus of his presentation was the role of 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, as a conservation and development tool. Students and lecturers were introduced to how sustainable hunting can contribute to 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, particularly in communities located alongside wildlife areas.

We commend SADESA and the DDPM Department at the University of Limpopo for creating a platform that encourages meaningful dialogue between academic knowledge, professional practice and emerging opportunities within the wildlife economy.
