Mathewsons Retain Kimberley Mixed Pairs Crown

The Kimberley Sub-District Mixed Pairs Championship reached its conclusion on Sunday after two weekends of highly competitive bowling, with the region's top mixed combinations battling it out for honours in chilly winter conditions.

While temperatures remained low throughout the weekend, the standard of bowls on display was anything but cold, as players produced a number of outstanding performances in pursuit of the coveted title.

Following several rounds of demanding sectional play, four teams emerged to contest the semi-finals. Defending champions CP and Annelie Mathewson faced Freddy du Plessis and Helena Janse, while Driaan van Niekerk and Letticia Sterley took on John and Jeanne Vertue.

Both semi-finals had comfortable margins, with the Mathewsons and the combination of Van Niekerk and Sterley securing victories to book their places in the final. The results set up a repeat of last year's championship decider, adding further intrigue to an already exciting weekend.

The final lived up to expectations, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage during the early stages. After 14 ends the scores were locked at 11-all, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. However, in a scenario that has become familiar to many bowlers across the province, the experienced Mathewsons found another gear when it mattered most. Producing a clinical closing stretch, they pulled away from their opponents and ultimately secured a comfortable victory to successfully defend their title.

The playoff for third place was equally competitive. Freddy du Plessis and Helena Janse showed great determination to overcome John and Jeanne Vertue and claim the bronze medal position. Despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish, the father-and-daughter pairing of John and Jeanne can look back with pride on an excellent tournament campaign, having reached the semi-finals and challenged some of the district's strongest combinations.

Congratulations must also go to David Paulse and Rene van Niekerk, who finished fifth, as well as Charl and Cherese Labuschagne, who secured sixth place. Their performances earned them qualification for the Northern Cape Mixed Pairs Championships, which will be hosted in Kimberley this coming weekend.

With another successful Kimberley Sub-District Mixed Pairs Championship completed, attention now turns to the provincial event, where the district's leading combinations will look to continue their impressive form against the best bowlers from across the Northern Cape.

KSD held yet another successful fundraiser at Beaconsfield Park Bowling Club last night. The format for the evening was the entertaining KSD 15 Rules competition. The games consisted of 15 ends, with each end played under a different rule. Players were challenged to bowl with their opposite hands, play ends with the jack placed in the ditch from the start, and even compete with two jacks in play at the same time.

Congratulations to the winners on the night: John Vertue, Carlon Moodaley, Scotty Elliot and Kieran Kelly. Second place went to Chappie Matthews, Raff Matthews, Pieter Berg and Tanja, while third place was secured by Annelise, Andre, Bernie and Jayden.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the fundraiser and braved the cold evening. A special mention also goes to the KSD Minis sides, who made use of the event as a valuable opportunity for practice and team building.

Defending Champions Retain Title at Kimberley Sub-Districts Mixed Trips Final

The Kimberley Sub-Districts Mixed Trips tournament reached an exciting conclusion today at the historic Kimberley Town Bowling Club, the second-oldest bowling club in South Africa. After a series of hard-fought matches, the competition delivered a final worthy of the occasion.

Following seven grueling sectional games, the finalists were confirmed. Defending champions Marco Geel, Adi Koekemoer, and Gerrit Gagiano faced off against a formidable trio comprising David Paulse, Charl Labuschagne, and Rene van Niekerk. Both teams had dominated their respective sections and entered the final as deserving contenders.

The match began with intensity, as Marco’s team took early control. A decisive five-shot gain in the third end saw them surge to an 8–2 lead, putting immediate pressure on their opponents. However, David’s side responded with resilience, steadily clawing their way back into contention by picking up a series of single shots.

Heading into the final end, the tension was palpable. David’s team required two shots to level the match and force an extra end, or three shots to sn**ch victory. Despite the pressure, it was the defending champions who held their nerve, closing out the match to secure their second Kimberley Sub-Districts Mixed Trips title in as many years.

The final proved to be a thrilling spectacle, with moments that had spectators on their feet—whether in celebration or anxious anticipation.

In the third-place playoff, Justin Griffith, Lee Murray, and Elmarie Anderson delivered a strong performance to claim victory. Bytjie du Plessis, Adriaan du Plessis, and Neville Ridgard finished in fourth place after a commendable showing throughout the tournament.

Champions Crowned at Kimberley Sub-District Singles Finals

The Kimberley Sub-District (KSD) Singles reached an exciting conclusion today as the 2026 champions were crowned after two weekends of high-quality bowls and fiercely contested matches across the city.

Ladies Singles Glory at Beaconsfield Park

The ladies’ singles, hosted at Beaconsfield Park, saw a familiar name rise to the top once again. Annelie Mathewson was crowned champion for yet another year, reaffirming her status as one of the stalwarts of Northern Cape bowls.

While not a veteran in age, Annelie’s long list of accolades and victories in both sub-district and district competitions has firmly established her as one of the most respected competitors in the region. This year proved no different, although the path to the title was far from easy.

Drawn in a challenging section packed with contenders eager to topple the reigning force, Annelie had to maintain focus and composure throughout. She did exactly that, topping her section to book her place in the final against the fast-rising Helena Janse.

Helena, relatively new to the game with only a few years of competitive experience, has already made a significant impression on the local bowls scene. She too emerged at the top of her section after claiming victories over several strong opponents, setting up a mouth-watering final.

The championship match delivered in every sense. Annelie started confidently, building a comfortable early lead. But Helena showed tremendous character, refusing to fade and steadily working her way back into contention. In a nail-biting finish, experience ultimately proved decisive. Annelie held her nerve and closed out the match 21–17 to secure the 2026 title.

In the third and fourth-place playoff, Adi Koekemoer claimed victory over Rene van Niekerk, earning the final qualification spot from KSD for the upcoming Northern Cape Bowls Singles.

Men’s Singles at Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club

The KSD Men’s Singles unfolded at Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club, where a strong field competed for top honours and coveted provincial qualification spots.

Emerging as the 2026 Kimberley Sub-District champion was Driaan van Niekerk, who delivered a composed and consistent performance throughout the tournament to secure the title.

The final standings were as follows:

Champion: Driaan van Niekerk

Runner-up: Johan Botes

3rd Place: Jobo de Villiers

4th Place: Roy Williams

5th Place: CP Mathewson

6th Place: David Paulse

All six players have qualified to represent Kimberley Sub-District at the Northern Cape Singles, which will take place in three weeks’ time.

With seasoned champions defending their dominance and emerging talents announcing themselves on the big stage, the 2026 KSD Singles once again showcased the depth of bowls talent in Kimberley, setting the stage for an exciting provincial showdown ahead.
