Champions League is a Grassroot Soccer UCLA/University of Stellenbosch funded project designed for men 18-24 year old who are unemployed and potentially at risk for substance abuse. The structured soccer league has a total of 71 players led by 11 male coaches/facilitators. Teams meet for two practices, a combination of life skill and soccer, and one match day weekly. Players are rewarded for posit
ive behaviour such as passed drug/alcohol tests, attendance and sportsmanship. Players will be put through artisan job training courses to potentially find employment. The project is intended to evaluate the success and impact of using concrete awards, short term daily incentives, and longer term access to job/developmental training to shape, evaluate and improve at-risk young men’s daily routines and behaviors such as substance abuse, HIV risky behavior and other health regiments.
