This was at the Kyu-Gradings in mid-October of 2025. I’d never had such a difficult grading process in my karate history.

The stress of having severe injuries which affected my movement and kicking ability whilst also thinking about how compromised my overall training for the World Championship (taking place in ~5weeks time) was unmatched.

Yet, the Shihans, Senseis and all facilitators were graceful enough that they accommodated my shortcomings at the time.

Looking forward to the next kyu-gradings to make up for this one!

Wearing courage, discipline and resilience like a safety gi!

I had to gather courage to start karate later in my youth. Discipline played a key role in my progress and resilience is ultimate in sustaining me🌹

This saying by Shihan James (as shown below), and its evolution within me holds much depth. It speaks to:

1. Character over outcome: Results matter, but integrity matters more
2. Growth mindset: A loss handled well becomes a lesson, not a limitation. A win, good or bad, calls for improvement
3. Warrior spirit: True martial artists measure themselves by honor, and not just trophies or medals

Losing with humility, reflection, and dignity often builds stronger champions than winning without character or discipline.
