Curro Kathu hosted a very successful golf day at Sishen Golf Club this past Friday, 6th September 2018. The day started with icy cold winter temperatures but nevertheless, a full field of players came to support the school. A shotgun start, scramble drive, 4 ball alliance with the best and worst score to count was the format for the day. This did make the game a little more interesting and difficult than usual. Players couldn’t rely on teammates to carry them when their skills failed them, everyone had to give their best and of course the sponsored “wet” holes did not do much for the concentration but the atmosphere and fun aspect of the day was just awesome. Golf days and other similar events in small towns are important to build stronger communities; it not only brings people together in a social environment but supports businesses and locals in many ways. It’s fantastic to see how our local business communities support schools and worthy causes with sponsorships, gifts and contributions. Happy golfing! See you on the course!
Results of the day:
Winners: PC de Bruin; A Louw; JP Lourencinho; J Snyman / 91 points 2nd place: A v Rooyen; H Espach; R Hattingh; JP Esnouf /90 points 3rd place: Q v Wyk; G Mostert; A Roberts; T Pearson / 86 points

The Sishen Junior Open was held the weekend of the 18 and19th of August. It was one of the 4 Order of Merit tournaments for selection of the Northern Cape teams. The Junior Open events are by far the most delightful golfing events on the golfing calendar, it is so inspirational to witness the pure raw and natural talent these youngsters possess and they do it with such ease and grace. The very youngsters, also known as the “Guppys”, were a big highlight, not only are they just too cute for words but showed off some real talent and surprisingly a winning attitude.
The highlight of the tournament was the future star of Sishen Golf Club our local boytjie, Lyle Pedro who undoubtedly stole the show. On day one Pedro and Desmond v d Walt finished the day all square, both with a (80/ 77)157 leading the talented youngster from Upington, Willem Gresse(82/78)160 by 3 shots.
Day 2, Pedro did not start well at all, after the first 9holes was trailing v d Walt by 4 shots. According to Pedro, he approached the second 9 with a plan to win, deciding to put constant pressure on V d Walt. Pedro handles pressure well and if things goes wrong he is determined to move on and set it right. He managed to close the lead as v d Walt battled a bit on the second 9, but the elated Pedro took the win on the 18th hole when the sunk his putt. This is an incredible young man with great talent and an extraordinary positive mature mental attitude for his age. This is probably what puts him above the rest, we expect great things from not only him but a few youngsters like Desmond v d Walt; Willem Gresse; Jano Malan; Divan Snyders; Gordey Fatkulin; Nigel de Jager and Darian Fortune are names to look out for in future golfing events. These kids really have what it takes! Well done to all of you for your great achievements, super attitudes and the awesome sportsmanship shown throughout the tournament. We wish you all the best for the next events to follow.

The administrators are pleased to finally to take over the original Sishen Golf Club Face Book page which has been inactive and not up to date with all the events and happenings. We did consider merging the two pages but unfortunately all photos and information on this page will be lost so we decided to keep it. We could use it as a public group where everyone can post golf related issues but request feedback on this. No further updates or post will be made on this page so we ask you please to join the Sishen Golf Club Page if you have not already joined. We thank you for your support.

Alle winste gegenereer uit hierdie dag word geskenk aan Bergenrus Tehuis vir Bejaardes in Olifantshoek. Die dame aan die stuur daar is Mev. Isabel Smit. Pirtek hosted a golf day at Shishen Golf club on Friday 1st December in aid of raising funds for their cricket team as well as for development of cricket. The people of Pirtek are passionate about the sport and care about getting local kids in the community involved with the idea of keeping them off the streets. The format was a four ball alliance with scramble drive which delivered some good scores. It was well hosted and organized golf day with many locals supporting this event. Jack Black

This past week Kathu was visited by Jack Black, a unique tour of 32 golfers that have come to Kathu to play at Sishen Golf Club for the past 20 years. The history behind the tour is that 30 years ago, Danie Cronje (ex Absa boss) for years used to play in an Army Golf Day until one day it was cancelled. Danie Cronje then asked his friend and colleague Louw van Wyk, to join him. Together with their sons, they started a group of Dads and Lads golf tour to Kathu. They did this tour for ten years after which van Wyk’s sons invited their friends from RAU to join them and this is where the tour started for most of the current members. Andre Joubert (Juba) and Jacques de Villiers were originally invited where after Jack Black joined them. The name of Jack Black came about by a translation of the name ( from Afrikaans) of the organizer of the group who has been managing the logistics for the past 16 years.
The tour takes place every year between the 15th -30 November and would you believe that some of the caddies have been carrying their bags for over 10years.The players are split into two opposing sides, the Gripitandripit and the Chipitandlipit ( if you can read that) whom all compete for the infamous “Melkkan” as a trophy. The players come from all over South Africa.
One of their traditions is that the losing team has to swim the length of the dam on the 18th hole. It turns out that 2017 ended in a draw and we witnessed as all Jack Black golfers stripped to their jocks and braved the icy dam water with caddies cheering on. This year also saw their first Hole –in –one on the 17th. They rave about our course, our town and people and we as locals now know more about you and welcome you to our town. An awesome bunch of guys........looking forward to seeing you again next year Jack Black!
