CHEAPEST MARATHONS IN SOUTH AFRICA
If you’re looking for a good running deal, this is the list to check out. It pays to head out of the big city for a rural running adventure. And those in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga will want to head south.

Knysna Heads Marathon is back at the top of the table this year and is the only marathon in the county offering fuel economy below R3 per kilometre.

Laingsburg in the Karoo is second whilst the Umzila Ka Tambo in the Transkei rounds out the podium.

There’s some amazing value on this list (and a few races even throw in a free race t-shirt). I can recommend all those that I’ve run. Links to detailed race reports for those I’ve run since starting the blog are below:

MOST EXPENSIVE MARATHONS/ULTRAS IN SOUTH AFRICA
The bigger they are, the harder they’ll hit your pocket. The scent of Romano lingers in the air as Two Oceans scores an unwelcome victory. The good news is that the goodie bag will be a lot better in 2026 and the race fee will not be increased in 2026 or 2027.

Loskop is second but have substantially reduced their entry fee in 2026 (to R527 which likely sees them drop off the top 10 list altogether). Cape Town Marathon podiums and are expected to be the most expensive rand/km road race in South Africa next year as they’ve increased their 2026 fees while others have remained static or reduced.

Despite keeping their entry fee static for another year, Comrades is 4th followed by another of the big ultras, Om Die Dam, in 5th.

If you ran all 10 on the most expensive list, it would cost R6,664 in entry fees. Still much cheaper than running a major and most trail runs but organisers will need to look at creative ways to halt increases or risk excluding a large portion of the road running community.
