It comes as a great shock to hear of the passing of Toshiaki Watanabe Shihan, the branch chief of the Shimizu Dojo.

Watanabe Shihan was a quiet and kind gentleman whose actions spoke louder than words. He was a powerful budoka who loved rock climbing and photography. He came to South Africa in 2007 in support of the first Ryukyu Kobujutsu Seminar outside of Japan. He will be dearly missed.

The South African branch would like to extend condolences to his family and the Shimizu Dojo for their immense loss.

We had a good weekend seminar to celebrate our 50th anniversary amongst a few other milestones.

That being, Lee Jardine Shihan’s 20 years of of instruction &
Gabriel Katz’s 25th birthday.

But the highlight was definitely celebrating Sidney Johnson Sensei’s 90th birthday who continues to be an inspiration to everyone in the school. He has been training for 44 years now and still remains a stalwart in the South African branch, training 4 times a week and participating in the gradings panels.

The seminar was overseen by Lee Jardine Shihan and Gilbert Macquet Shibucho with junior instructors taking charge as the next generation showing their expertise to everyone.

It was an excellent weekend of training and we look forward to next year when Okawa Hanshi visits us to do a proper 50 year celebratory seminar with us (we did not want to interfere with the upcoming International Seminar in Greece).
