There’s a rare, fragile clarity that only exists at South Downs when the sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon. Before the city roar starts, before the emails begin to flood in, there is a moment of total sanctuary.

As you stand on the tee, watching the mist rise slowly off the Bloubos Spruit, the world feels incredibly small: and that’s a good thing. The clutter of the day ahead hasn’t taken root yet. It’s just you, the cool morning air, and the rhythmic sound of your spikes on the path.

This is where the mental reset happens. Each hole is a new chance to find your rhythm and focus on nothing but the flight of the ball and the quiet beauty of our historic parklands course. For many of us, the sight of a bunker feels like a trap. But what if you saw it as a chance for the most satisfying shot in the bag?

The secret to that soft, 'thump' sound and a ball that checks up on the green is all in the sand, not the ball. Aim to strike about two inches behind it, and most importantly, follow through like you’re trying to splash the sand onto the green. It’s a shot that requires trust, but when you get it right, there’s nothing quite like it.

It’s about making peace with the hazard and trusting your swing. There is honestly no better feeling than watching the ball check up next to the pin after a clean sand save. Come and find that feeling at South Downs this week.
