That night, Bridger–Teton National Forest was so quiet it was almost unsettling.
The campfire cast a glow on two young faces, laughing and chatting carefree. Hannah Kendrick, 17, a recent high school graduate, roasted marshmallows beside her 21-year-old sister, Lillian. They talked about college, the future, and the wonderful things that awaited them. A perfect summer night—at least on the surface.
Around them were dozens of other tents. Families with young children. Older couples. Regular patrols of rangers. Nothing suggested danger.
Around 9 p.m., the two sisters extinguished the fire and crawled into their blue two-person tent.
“Good night,” Lillian said to her neighbors.
No one knew that those were their last words in their freedom.
The next morning, the campsite woke up as usual.
But something was very wrong in front of that tent.
The tent flap was wide open.
A clean, knife-cut line of fabric ran down the side.
Clothes, sleeping bags, flashlights lay scattered on the ground.
The car was still there.
The phone was still there.
The wallet, the keys—everything was still there.
Only the two sisters were gone.
No screams in the night.
No one saw them leave.
And no one could have imagined that, as the whole country began preparing for the worst, 22 days later, deep underground, in a dark cave a few kilometers from the camp, those two girls were still alive and imprisoned—their hell had only just begun....
