The Boundless City Library Team and Public Art Team have been busy the last few months transforming the The Ansteys Building library so that it can serve as an after-school hub for students!

Check out the transformation. The library team worked incredibly hard to remove water damage, seal and prime, clean, repair sinks, repair furniture, install shelves, and inventory over 1,000 books!

The artists created one-of-kind artworks following an ocean theme that they decided would create a fun and calming environment for students. Posts about the art created by each artist are coming soon! Halaal DrFoodz Khan Blaai Koranges Art Bonga Gamede Naledi Chai

Boundless City is a social enterprise that focuses on community-based urban development in the Joburg Inner City through public art projects and public space development and programming. These initiatives focus on creating employment while enhancing public spaces.

Boundless City has two projects underway as part of the Social Employment Fund. They have set up and are running a library and afterschool homework programme in the Anstey’s Building, which is home to over 250 Inner City residents. The space is ideal for the project.

Their second initiative is at the Ernest Oppenheimer Park where Boundless City have run a basketball league (Hoop Mania) since 2013. Community members are now being rewarded for taking ownership of the safety in the area, making the park more user friendly and active. Along with these Safety Ambassadors who have been trained by SAPs, Boundless City is also in the process of adding new public art to the space.

Devlin Tim created this mural for the Our City, Our Block Indlulamithi Routes project in Yeoville/Bellevue in 2021. This work is outside United Church School , one of five schools in the partnership. We just added a few more Main Street Maps at Cramers Coffee (Main St cnr Harrison) if you’d like to pick one up. Did you know that Cramers Coffee is featured on the map as one of seven Safe Spots and one of fifty-two Black-Owned Businesses? Check it out at bit.ly/mainstreetmap

Artists were selected by a panel of judges via a public call process. The judges included representatives of the local Ward Committee, the JDA, CoJ’s Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage, and a community arts organisation in the Ward.
This is a project by the Johannesburg Development Agency. Sticky Situations and Boundless City were appointed to facilitate and implement.
