Always follow/ close in on your drop shot to avoid this situation! After a good return, a little slip from the opponent gave rise to a drop shot. It was the perfect play; expecting the opponent not to get there, the positioning was exposed and opponent played an even better drop shot. It’s easy to point fingers at players and tell them what they don’t do right, while in the field of play, many emotions and options come up; being calm and executing a clear plan can be the difference. This is why as coaches, we need to continually improve ourselves in whatever way possible so as to help our players make good choices when faced with challenges. It’s easy to fix technique and what it should look like, but coaching for/ against a myriad of game situations needs an experienced coach who can work through this and know how to equip players with the necessary tools. Accepting we don’t know it all and also make poor choices is part of the process. Very rare to expose a deficiency, we always want to post the good and great sides.
