A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON ARCHITECTURE

Day 2 got underway this morning with an international keynote address from Hugh Simpson of ARB-UK, bringing a global perspective to the conference’s ongoing conversations around architectural education and professional practice.

The session offered an opportunity to reflect on international approaches, experiences and perspectives, contributing to a meaningful exchange of ideas between local and global architectural contexts.

As the profession continues to evolve, these cross-border conversations are essential to shaping the future of architecture and architectural education.

REIMAGINING HUMAN SETTLEMENTS THROUGH SPATIAL JUSTICE

The Minister of Human Settlements challenged architects and built-environment professionals to think beyond individual buildings and consider how design can transform communities.

In the address, four critical areas were highlighted:

🔹 Multiple inclusive anchors — creating public infrastructure that serves communities beyond its primary purpose.
🔹 Design for dignity — ensuring quality, beauty, safety and excellence are accessible to every community.
🔹 Local economic inclusion — using development to create opportunities for local labour, artisans, SMMEs and skills development.
🔹 Transforming education and professional formation — preparing the next generation of architects to shape more inclusive, connected and resilient settlements.

The message was clear: how we design, build and invest in our communities matters.

Architecture has the power to do more than shape buildings — it can help shape opportunity, dignity, belonging and a more spatially just South Africa.

Celebrating Excellence in Architectural Education

This morning, Dr Finzi Saidi was honoured with the Outstanding Leadership Award by the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg.

The award recognises Dr Saidi’s excellence in the transformation of architectural education, celebrating his leadership, contribution and commitment to shaping the future of the architectural profession.

A well-deserved recognition of a leader whose work continues to contribute to the advancement of architectural education and transformation in South Africa.

REGULATION IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT

How does architectural regulation need to respond to an increasingly connected professional environment?

This was at the heart of Panel Discussion 2: Architectural Regulation in a Global Context – Challenges and Opportunities.

Moderated by Kevin Bingham, the discussion brought together Hugh Simpson (ARB-UK), Maurice Brown (NCARB), Adv. Toto Fiduli (SACAP) and Emiel Murwira (ACZ).

The panel examined the challenges and opportunities surrounding architectural regulation while bringing together perspectives from different regulatory contexts.

RETHINKING HOW WE EDUCATE FUTURE ARCHITECTS

Prof. Carin Combrinck opened the conversation on Education Methodologies and Curriculum Development, highlighting the role of education in preparing future architectural professionals for a changing profession.

The session reinforced the need to continuously evolve how we develop the knowledge, skills and competencies needed by tomorrow’s architects.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS | DEPUTY MINISTER

The future of South Africa’s built environment starts with the professionals we educate today.

Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Honourable Sihle Zikalala, delivered a keynote highlighting the need for stronger links between architectural education, professional practice, transformation, innovation and infrastructure development.

A key message from the address was the need to move “from consultation to collaboration, and from collaboration to implementation.”

As he reminded delegates:

“The future is not something we wait for. The future is something we build.”

A WESTERN CAPE PERSPECTIVE

MEC Tertius Simmers, Department of Infrastructure, Western Cape, shared a provincial perspective on infrastructure and the built environment, setting the context for the day’s discussions.

The session highlighted the importance of understanding the regional infrastructure landscape as we shape the future of the built environment.

GLOBAL INSIGHTS | LOCAL CONVERSATIONS

International guest speaker Dr D**g Wang joined Day 1 of the SACAP Education Conference 2026, contributing to the day's exchange of knowledge and perspectives.

His participation added to the conference's international dialogue around architecture and the ways in which the profession continues to respond to changing times.

The day highlighted the importance of learning from perspectives beyond our own contexts.
