Staying on the Wilier theme

Wilier was founded in 1906 in Bassano del Grappa. The “Triestina” part of the name came after World War II as a patriotic nod to the contested city of Trieste. The company has a long racing pedigree—Fiorenzo Magni won the 1948 Giro d’Italia on a Wilier, Marco Pantani rode one, and more recently Mark Cavendish used a Filante SLR for his record 35th Tour de France stage win in 2024. The bikes are currently ridden by the Groupama-FDJ WorldTour team.

“Filante” is Italian for streamlined (or like a shooting star). It’s a lightweight, aggressive racing bike built for speed, handling, and that classic Italian look.

Top selling MTB brands in South Africa?

Specialized (22%), SCOTT (14.5%), and Trek (10%) are the top three mountain bike brands in South Africa based on the latest available data.
These figures come from TREAD Media’s 2025 South African Mountain Biking Survey (conducted December 2025 among 2,504 respondents and published April 2026). It measures current primary bike ownership among active mountain bikers rather than official new-unit retail sales (which are not publicly broken down by brand for 2026). Ownership is a strong proxy for popularity and recent sales in the enthusiast segment.

Specialized: 22.36% (up from 20.35% in 2024)
SCOTT: 14.50% (stable vs. 14.59% in 2024)
Trek: 10.28% (down from 12.33% in 2024)
The same top three (and top four, with Giant at 7.23%) have held for several years, though Specialized has gained slightly while Trek has eased. Titan Racing (a South African brand) is fifth at 6.14% and rising. The survey recorded 94 brands in total.
No comprehensive 2026 year-to-date official sales statistics by brand have been published as of early September 2026. Market-size reports estimate the South African mountain bike market at around USD 82–83 million in 2025 with projected growth, but they do not break out brand shares. Retail listings and classifieds (e.g., Bike Hub) also show strong presence for these three plus Giant, Titan, and others, consistent with the survey.
