Forty years ago, two men changed the direction of my life — and I doubt either of them knew it.

John Booysen, on a tennis court, told a sixteen-year-old he had a great forehand. Donald Mackay, two years later, handed me my tennis club's secretary book and refused to let me put it down. One made me a player. The other made me an administrator. The same year I started coaching the kids in our township, because by then I understood what they'd really given me: belief.
