Bafana Bafana endured a difficult start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after suffering a 2-0 defeat to hosts Mexico national football team. The disappointing performance drew widespread criticism, with costly defensive errors and two red cards leaving South Africa with a mountain to climb in Group A.

The reaction from former Bafana Bafana stars was equally telling. Appearing as television pundits, Quinton Fortune, Aaron Mokoena and Benni McCarthy were left visibly stunned at full-time. Their silence and expressions of disbelief quickly went viral on social media, reflecting the frustration felt by many South African football supporters after the opening defeat.

South Africa's problems began when mistakes while attempting to play out from the back contributed to Mexico’s opening goal. Matters worsened when Sphephelo Sithole received the tournament’s first red card before Themba Zwane was also sent off later in the match, leaving Bafana with nine men for the closing stages.

Despite the setback, coach Hugo Broos remains confident his players can respond positively. The Belgian tactician has urged his squad to recover quickly and focus on improving their attacking play ahead of a crucial Group A clash against the Czech Republic national football team next week.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos expressed disappointment after South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to hosts Mexico national football team in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match became even more difficult for Bafana after red cards for Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane reduced the team to nine men in the second half.

Broos questioned the decision that led to Zwane’s dismissal, suggesting that the Mexican player had obstructed his player before the incident. While accepting the first red card, the Bafana coach felt the second sending-off was harsh and admitted it was frustrating to finish such an important match with two players fewer.

Despite the result, Broos took encouragement from several aspects of his team's performance. He believed Bafana Bafana enjoyed periods of control and caused problems for the host nation, particularly after overcoming a difficult opening 20 minutes. The Belgian tactician noted that Mexico struggled to find space at times as South Africa grew into the contest.

However, Broos identified possession and decision-making as key areas that require improvement. He pointed to costly turnovers that directly led to Mexico’s goals, stressing that mistakes at World Cup level are often punished immediately. With group-stage points still up for grabs, Bafana will now focus on correcting those errors ahead of their next fixture.

Manchester United have officially confirmed Michael Carrick as the club’s new permanent head coach following an impressive spell in interim charge. Carrick guided United back into the UEFA Champions League after winning 11 of his 16 matches, convincing club leadership that he was the right man to lead the next phase of the rebuild at Old Trafford.

The appointment reportedly received strong backing from director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, who were impressed not only by results on the pitch but also by Carrick’s leadership, tactical approach and connection with the squad. Carrick has now signed an initial deal running until 2028 and says he is determined to restore Manchester United to competing for major honours again.

Speaking after the announcement, Carrick described the opportunity as a moment of immense pride, reflecting on his 20-year association with the club. He praised the resilience and unity shown by the players during his interim spell and promised to move forward with “ambition and a clear sense of purpose” as United prepare for a new era.

Despite the excitement surrounding the appointment, former United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen warned that expectations at Manchester United remain enormous. Meulensteen believes Carrick will immediately be judged on his ability to challenge for the Premier League title and deliver trophies, while also pushing the club to strengthen the squad with major signings during the upcoming transfer window
