*Kruisfontein United vs Gardens*

Surely the clash of the weekend. A rivalry that has grown fiercely competitive and intense over the years, with bragging rights always front and centre.
Two giants who have dominated this competition over the past three seasons go head-to-head once again — and with it, a chance for either side to stake an early warning.

Gardens, the defending champions and most successful club in the competition, will come into this encounter with confidence. They’ve had the upper hand in recent meetings, with Kruisfontein last tasting victory over them back on 19 October 2024. However, despite that edge, the Greens are coming off a disappointing showing at the Saldanha Easter Tournament followed by a shock defeat at the hands of Park. Questions will be asked about consistency, and they’ll be eager to bounce back and prove that those results were only a minor setback. They’ll be eager to put that behind them and remind everyone why they’re often at their most dangerous when written off.

Kruisfontein United, meanwhile, seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time. They’re building a distinct brand of rugby — a balanced blend of youth and experience that’s producing exciting, attacking rugby. Their young talent is already making waves, highlighted by their recent triumph in the Kouga Mayoral Cup this past Saturday.

With perfect rugby weather on the cards and two passionate supporter bases set to pack “die Las”, this encounter promises fireworks.

*Progress vs Jeffreys Bay United*

This will be the first time these two sides meet again since their clash in the 2022 GC semi-finals. Progress have undergone a full revamp, bringing in fresh faces and reshaping their squad. Their impressive run in the recent Super 14 once again proved why the Kariega giants remain such a formidable force. This is a team built for big moments—count them out at your own risk.
They host Jeffreys Bay this weekend at Central Fields, with Progress placing strong faith in their youth as emerging talent continues to rise through the ranks under confident coaching.
Jeffreys Bay, meanwhile, come off a thrilling Kouga derby victory against Hankey. After a tightly contested first half, the Surfer Boys delivered a clinical second-half performance to seal the win at Weza Park. With one of the most dangerous backlines in the competition, they have the ability to strike from anywhere on the field.
Progress will need to stay sharp—because if given space, Jeffreys Bay can turn the game in an instant.

*PE Harlequins vs Trying Stars*

This weekend promises a blockbuster showdown, with PE Harlequins taking on Trying Stars in what could be one of the standout fixtures.
Harlequins come in as one of the clear favourites for the competition. Last year’s runners-up have built a reputation around a dominant forward pack and a clinical, dead-eye flyhalf — a combination that gives any opponent headaches. They’ve carried strong form into this season, including back-to-back victories over defending champions Gardens earlier in the year. Their recent run in the Ebrahim Patel Community Cup further underlined their quality, even though they fell agonisingly short in the semi-finals, losing 40–39 to eventual winners Robertson Town.
Trying Stars, meanwhile, arrive as underdogs — a tag they’ll likely embrace. With less pressure on their shoulders, they’ve shown they can be dangerous when overlooked. NMU learned that lesson the hard way after being on the receiving end of a dominant 24(3)–5(1) defeat. Stars are not a side to be dismissed, and if given momentum, they can make this a far more competitive contest than many expect.

Score Grand Challenge Cup - Round 1

🚨Kruisfontein United vs Jeffreys Bay United🚨

The eagerly anticipated Kouga derby lived up to all expectations. What promised to be a thrilling encounter certainly delivered, with the midweek build-up—fuelled by passionate exchanges between supporters from both clubs—setting the perfect tone for the clash.

In the end, Kruisfontein emerged as deserved victors with a 26–13 bonus point win in a game of two contrasting halves.

Kruisfontein came out firing, racing to a 12–0 lead within the opening 20 minutes. JBay managed to get on the scoreboard with a penalty, narrowing the gap to 12–3 at halftime.
However, JBay came out with renewed energy in the second half, delivering a gutsy performance. They struck back with two quick tries from Heinerich Ruiters and Matthew Thlela, swinging the momentum firmly in their favour.

But the tide turned once again when Kruisfontein made key substitutions, introducing the elusive Donovan Phike. The speedy youngster made an immediate impact, showcasing blistering pace, showing a clean pair of heels and leaving defenders trailing on both occasions as he crossed the line twice. His efforts sealed the victory, sinking the Surfer Boys and securing a full five points for the Purple Army in their league season opener.

*The Return of the Prodigal Son*

In a move that has surprised many in rugby circles, coach Lloyd Rossouw has returned to his hometown to rejoin his former club, Gardens. The decision comes shortly after Gardens reclaimed the EPRU Score Grand Challenge Cup with a narrow victory over Rossouw’s former side, PE Harlequins.

Rossouw cited personal reasons for the move, saying he is simply happy to be back at his boyhood club. While it remains unclear what role he will assume at Gardens, one thing is certain: coach “Bullet” is on a mission.

Best of luck for the new season coach.

Hlela in high demand!!

Rugby sensation Themba Hlela has put all speculation to rest after being spotted at the Pellsrus Rugby Field, reassuring the J-Bay faithful that his heart and loyalty remain firmly with the Surfer Boyz.

This comes in the wake of widespread rumours suggesting a possible move to reigning EPRU Grand Challenge champions Multisure Gardens. It has been no secret that MS Gardens have shown strong interest in securing the services of the talented young winger, with talk of a potential reunion alongside fellow J-Bay players Donlic and Gregan

Hlela’s presence at Pellsrus, however, appears to send a clear message amid the speculation, much to the relief of local supporters.

The Saga continues…
