Rhodes University Canoe Club

Rhodes University Canoe Club This is the Official RUCC page where we post updates, pictures and news about the club. Full membership fee: R1000 a year. Social membership: R300

The club was founded in 2003 and has grown bigger each year with 2017 being one of the most successful years the club has seen. The club trains two-three times a week at Settlers Dam where the canoes are stored in the racks there. Settlers Dam is situated in Thomas Baines Reserve and is a 20 minute drive from Grahamstown. The reserve and dam boasts beautiful scenery and many antelope including buf

falo, kudu and waterbuck. The club does both flatwater and river races every year, with the FISH River Canoe Marathon, in Cradock, being the highlight of the canoeing calendar. The club will get you your flat water proficiency as well as your river proficiency (which is needed to do any river race) and qualify you for ‘A grade’ races like the FISH. In order to qualify for the main event that everyone wants to do (THE FISH), we go to Cradock a few weekends of the year and teach you how to river paddle (on the FISH) and learn how to go down rapids and weirs etc
We have two memberships: 1) Social and 2) Full member. Social membership allows you to get transport to the dam and use of paddles and canoes. Full membership includes transport to training at the dam races, and tripping weekends, camping fees at races, a bit of subsistence money for race weekends, the use of club equipment.
