VLC Triathlon and Open Water Swimming Club is a section belonging the greater Victoria Lake Club in Germiston. Membership of the club affords you access to use the water to train in. If you are already affiliated to a club, there is no need to switch, you can retain your affiliation while being a member of VLC. The club is already registered with Central Gauteng Triathlon. The club caters to swimm
ers and triathletes of all levels. For novice swimmers, moving from the pool to open water swimming can be a daunting experience. The anxiety of getting your next breath can be controlled and overcome with training and practise. Supervised swim sessions can be arranged with the club captain. For intermediate swimmers, open water swimming provides the opportunity to practice important skills that are often neglected in pool swimming. Practising to sight regularly is a crucial skill to master in order to swimming straight and efficiently. Being adaptable to breathe on either side of your body is another important skill to master. Race day anxiety attacks brought on by catching a wave in your face can be reduced by becoming accustomed to open water conditions. Training in open water also provides the opportunity for you to get accustomed to using your wetsuit before race day. For serious athletes, nothing beats preparing for race day by training in race day conditions. Depending on the wind and the time of day, the lake can become quite choppy which will test your mental and physical resolve to block out environmental factors and just pull through it. There are many race events held at the lake throughout the year including the Central Gauteng Triathlon Championship. Victoria Lake also boasts some of the cleanest recreational water in Gauteng. We welcome you and if you are interested, please contact the club captain.
