Many homes and public bathrooms in Japan use a clever toilet design called a “tank sink” system.

After flushing, clean water flows out of a small faucet built on top of the toilet tank, allowing people to wash their hands immediately. Instead of going down a separate drain, that water is collected inside the tank and reused for the next flush.

The idea is surprisingly simple but incredibly efficient. Since the water used for handwashing doesn’t need to be perfectly clean afterward, reusing it for flushing helps reduce overall water waste without affecting hygiene.

In a country that values efficiency, cleanliness, and smart design, this became a practical solution for conserving resources, especially in smaller homes and apartments where space is limited.
