Worst Foods for Stomach Ulcers Part2

We mentioned the good foods, now we are getting into what we need to avoid go "cold turkey" (breaking any habit abruptly, but is mostly used for bad habits.)

1. Milk

•Doctors used to tell people to drink milk to treat their ulcers.
•That was before better remedies, like acid-blocking drugs, came along, and modern homemade remedies.
• Today we know milk can’t help prevent or relieve an ulcer. In fact, it might actually make things worse by prompting your stomach to make more acid.

2. Alcohol

• If you’re prone to ulcers or have one now, it’s best to limit alcohol or avoid it altogether.
• Research has shown that booze irritates and can even damage your digestive tract. It can make ulcers worse.

3. Fatty Foods

• They take longer to digest, which can lead to belly pain and bloating -- bad news if you have an ulcer.
• If they make your stomach feel worse, take a break from them.

4. Spicy Foods: It Depends

• For a long time, doctors thought spicy food was a major cause of ulcers. We now know this isn’t true.
• Still, some people find that it makes their symptoms worse. Avoid it if it causes you pain.

5. Citrus Fruits: It Depends

• At first, it would seem to make sense that acidic foods like citrus and tomatoes would aggravate ulcers.
• But there’s no strong evidence that they have any effect on them.
• Still, we all have unique reactions to foods, so if acidic ones make your ulcer feel worse, skip them.

6. Chocolate: It Depends

• Chocolate has lots of potential health benefits. But it often causes discomfort for some people who have ulcers.
• If eating chocolate makes you feel worse, wait to indulge until your ulcer has healed.

7. Caffeine: Ask Your Doctor

• The research is mixed on whether caffeine -- coffee in particular -- makes ulcers feel worse.
• Yet it’s still common advice to cut it out if you have one.
• Ask your doctor, but you may not have to give up coffee as long as your symptoms don’t get worse.

What Causes Ulcers? PART1

Doctors used to think that certain foods could give you ulcers. But now we know other things cause them, like taking pain-relieving drugs for a long time or infection with bacteria called H. pylori.Although food doesn’t cause or treat ulcers, some can make your pain worse, while others may help you heal faster.

Best

1. Foods With Probiotics

Foods like yogurt, miso, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and tempeh are rich in “good” bacteria called probiotics. They may help ulcers by fighting an H. pylori infection or by helping treatments work better.

2. Fiber-Rich Foods

• Apples, pears, oatmeal, and other foods that are high in fiber are good for ulcers in two ways.
• Fiber can lower the amount of acid in your stomach while easing bloating and pain
• Research has also shown that a diet rich in fiber may help prevent ulcers.

3. Sweet Potato

• It’s high in vitamin A, and there’s evidence that this nutrient can help shrink stomach ulcers and may also play a role in preventing them.
• Other foods with a good dose of vitamin A include spinach, carrots, cantaloupe, and beef liver.

4. Red Bell Pepper

• It’s rich in vitamin C, which can help protect you from ulcers in a number of ways.
• For one, vitamin C plays an important role in wound healing.
• People who don’t get enough are also more likely to get ulcers.
• Get this nutrient in citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwis, and broccoli, too.

EGD is done on most people when peptic ulcers are suspected or when you have:

•Low blood count (anemia)
•Trouble swallowing
•Bloody vomit
•Bloody or dark and tarry-looking stools
•Lost weight without trying
•Other findings that raise a concern for cancer in the stomach

Testing for H pylori is also needed. This may be done by biopsy of the stomach during endoscopy, with a stool test, or by a urea breath test.

Other tests you may have include:

• Hemoglobin blood test to check for anemia
• Stool occult blood test to test for blood in your stool

Sometimes, you may need a test called an upper GI series. A series of x-rays are taken after you drink a thick substance that contains barium. This does not require sedation.

Exams and Tests

To detect an ulcer, you may need a test called an upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD).

• This is a test to check the lining of the esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and first part of the small intestine.
• It is done with a small camera (flexible endoscope) that is inserted down the throat.
• This test most often requires sedation given through a vein.
• In some cases, a smaller endoscope may be used that is passed into the stomach through the nose. This does not require sedation.

Stomach Ulcers Part 3

A rare condition, called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, causes the stomach to produce too much acid, leading to stomach and duodenal ulcers.

Symptoms
Small ulcers may not cause any symptoms and may heal without treatment. Some ulcers can cause serious bleeding.

Abdominal pain (often in the upper mid-abdomen) is a common symptom. The pain can differ from person to person. Some people have no pain.

Pain occurs:

• In the upper abdomen
• At night and wakes you up
• When you feel an empty stomach, often 1 to 3 hours after a meal

Other symptoms include:

• Feeling of fullness and problems drinking as much fluid as usual
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Bloody or dark, tarry stools
• Chest pain
• Fatigue
• Vomiting, possibly bloody
• Weight loss
• Ongoing heartburn

Stomach Ulcers Part 2

The most common cause of ulcers is infection of the stomach by bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H pylori). Most people with peptic ulcers have these bacteria living in their digestive tract. Yet, many people who have these bacteria in their stomach do not develop an ulcer.

The following factors raise your risk for peptic ulcers:

• Drinking too much alcohol
• Regular use of aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Smoking ci******es or chewing to***co
• Being very ill, such as being on a breathing machine
• Radiation treatments
• Stress

Stomach ulcer Part1

• The stomach is the organ of the digestive system in which food travels from the esophagus and is further broken down before its nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine.
• It produces acid and various enzymes that break down food into simple substances.
• The inside wall of the stomach is protected from the acid and enzymes by a mucous lining.
• Ulcers are caused when there is an imbalance between the digestive juices produced by the stomach and the various factors that protect the lining of the stomach.
• Symptoms of ulcers may include bleeding. On rare occasions, an ulcer may completely erode the stomach wall. A major cause of stomach ulcers is the bacteria called Helicobacter pylori.
• Treatment regimens for ulcers caused this bacterium usually include medications to suppress the stomach acid as well as antibiotics to eradicate the infection.
• Most ulcers occur in the first, inner surface, layer of the inner lining. A hole in the stomach or duodenum is called a perforation. This is a medical emergency.

Benefits and health risks of bananas

1. Blood pressure

The American Heart AssociationTrusted Source (AHA) encourage people to lower their intake of salt, or sodium, and increase their consumption of foods that contain potassium. Potassium can help manage blood pressure and reduce strain on the cardiovascular system.

A medium banana provides almost 9% of a person’s daily potassium needs, according to the nutritional information from the above sources.

2.Asthma

A 2007 study suggested that eating bananas might help prevent wheezing in children with asthma. One reason for this could be the antioxidant and potassium content of bananas. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.

3.Cancer

Lectin acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants help the body remove molecules known as free radicals. If too many free radicals build up, cell damage can occur, potentially leading to cancer
In 2004, researchers noted that children who consumed bananas, orange juice, or both appeared to have a lower risk of developing leukemia.

The study authors suggested that this could be due to the vitamin C content, as this, too, has antioxidant properties.

4.Heart health

Bananas contain fiber, potassium, folate, and antioxidants, such as vitamin C. All of these support heart health.

A 2017 reviewTrusted Source found that people who follow a high fiber diet have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than those on a low fiber diet.

5.Diabetes

Bananas are also part of an approach known as the BRAT dietTrusted Source, which some doctors recommend for treating diarrhea. BRAT stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.

Diarrhea can lead to a loss of water and electrolytes, such as potassium. Bananas can replace these nutrients.

7.Preserving memory and boosting mood

Bananas contain Trusted Source tryptophan, an amino acid that may help preserve memory, boost a person’s ability to learn and remember things, and regulate mood.

8.Potassium

Bananas are rich in the mineral potassium. Potassium helps maintainTrusted Source fluid levels in the body and regulates the movement of nutrients and waste products in and out of cells.
