It starts in the dark.

Coffee steaming in the cold, rifles checked, the bakkie loaded while the first grey light barely touches the ridgeline. By the time the sun clears the Drakensberg, you're already glassing, reading the slopes, picking apart shadow and stone, looking for the shape that doesn't belong.

Then you walk. Sometimes for an hour, sometimes for most of the morning. You follow tracks, you test the wind, you stop and wait when Henry lifts a hand. There's no rush and no guarantee, and that's exactly the point. A hunt earned on foot, in real country, is worth ten handed to you from a truck.

Midday you rest up out of the heat. Afternoon, you're back at it as the light softens and the animals start to move again. And when the sun finally drops, you make your way back to camp with the day still buzzing in your chest.

This is what a day with Highlands Hunting Safaris actually looks like. Long, honest, and unforgettable.

Few animals wear their beauty quite like a Nyala bull.

Slate-grey and shaggy, with a mane running the length of his spine, chalk-white stripes down his flanks and bright tan socks pulled up over his hooves, a mature Nyala bull is one of the most striking animals you can hunt - and one of the hardest to catch in the open.

Nyala are creatures of the thick stuff. Riverine tangles, dense thornveld, the shadowed edges of the bush where the light barely reaches. They move at first light and last light and melt away in between, and a good bull has spent years learning exactly how to disappear. You don't so much stalk a Nyala as out-patience him.

KwaZulu-Natal is Nyala country in the truest sense, and Highlands Hunting Safaris hunts them free-range across the lowland bush where they thrive. It's close-cover work, often inside a hundred metres, where reading the wind and moving slow matters more than shooting far.

When a Nyala bull finally steps clear of the thicket, you'll understand why hunters travel across the world for this one.

Highlands Hunting Safaris isn't a one-size-fits-all operation. Every hunt is built around you, your goals, your hunting style, and your expectations.

People often ask us what a hunt with Highlands actually looks like. The answer is simple, it looks like whatever you want it to.

Some hunters arrive with a clear trophy list, others come for the mountain experience, pursuing Vaal Rhebok and Mountain Reedbuck where the air is thinner, the terrain is tougher, and every stalk is earned. Others are looking for something bigger, and we're happy to arrange that too.

Whether you prefer the classic walk-and-stalk experience across open grasslands, rugged mountains, thick bushveld, or a combination of all three, we'll tailor the hunt to suit you.

What never changes is the experience, the comfortable accommodation close to the hunting areas. Hearty meals. Daily laundry. Cold drinks are waiting at the end of the day. Your trophies are professionally field-prepared and handled, and airport transfers.

You get yourself here, we'll take care of everything else.

Let us build the hunt you've always wanted.

My heart couldn’t be prouder. I took Izak out on his first hunt. It was a great walk and stalk with an excellent placed shot on an old impala ram. Father son hunting is a real bonding experience.

Big congratulations to Mason on his first kudu! What a great father and sons hunting team!

The highlands of KwaZulu-Natal climb into the Drakensberg. With rolling grasslands, misty peaks, crystal streams, and steep valleys dotted with proteas and aloes, this is where you'll find Mountain Reedbuck, Bushbuck, Eland, Common Reedbuck, and the elusive Vaal Rhebok holding the high ground.

Drop down into the lowlands and the whole picture changes. Warmer air. Subtropical bushveld. Rivers cutting through thick cover and wetlands teeming with life. Some of the best plains game country in South Africa, with Nyala, Impala, Kudu, Warthog, Zebra, and Blue Wildebeest in real numbers.

Few hunting regions on the continent offer this much variety inside a single drive. A morning chasing mountain species on a Drakensberg ridge, an afternoon glassing bushveld for Kudu, and one Professional Hunter who knows both like the back of his hand.

Come and see it for yourself.
