This is the first of the Gotcha ads I have, age 17. I know there's heaps out there, trying to find more. Gotcha wasn't just a Brand.. it was a Consciousness! it's marketing genius & product pushes from the Soul of the late Michael Tomson, and I believe a potentially overlooked or under estimated Marc Mark Price (...my personal view anyway) . As a youngester I realised the Gotcha surfers happened to be be more photogenic & got more coverage 😂...and it played in my favour. This ad was during matric, when the ad broke in the ZigZag...kids brought it to school & I was treated like a celebrity. I was living in Queensburgh at the time, and my first train to the beach in the morning was the 03:05 from Malvern station after a 2km ride on my BMX RALEIGH ULTRA BURNER. More stories about that bike to come. Anyway, on my train trips home on the weekends in the mid afternoon I used to see all these kids getting on with white shirts & the word Gotcha & Instinct written on. It was there that I realised the need & opportunity for a value positioned surf brand, an authentic brand, a well priced brand. For years at one point when sponsored by Mr Price Pierre Tostee & I tried to convince them to do it...& it eventually happened...but more about that for another time. Gotcha was a Movement...it was insane to have been part of it, what privilege, what a journey...more posts to come 🙏
