A student asked me today if I could do a write up about the 8 limbs of Yoga, which I mentioned today in class during our opening meditation.
Someone called Patanjali did this 2000+ years before me, crafting a collection of "sutras" (threads) into a book called The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Yoga's foundational text, and the fundamental reference point for all things Yoga to this day.
Patanjali lists 8 limbs:
Yamas: The Dont's, such as Ahimsa (non-violence)
Niyamas: The Dos, yogic prescriptions such as Tapas, the yogic cleansing rituals.
Asana: Translated as 'seat', the physical 'Yoga' as we know it
Pranayama: Breath control (such as Ujjayi breathing which you apply during Asana practice),
Pratyahara: Sense withdrawal,
Dharana: Concentration
Dhyana: Meditation
Samadhi: Enlightenment
