An old Madala Nyala bull from the rugged Zululand mountains.

First afternoon luck in the rain.

After a long drive to KZN to hunt some complete free range species, we still had a couple of hours of daylight left and decided to try our luck for Bushbuck. With rain falling steadily, we pushed on, hoping an old ram would step out of the thick riverine cover and into the open.

As the rain finally eased, it didn't take long. This beautiful old ram emerged from the thickets, giving us the opportunity we had been waiting for. Ferruccio made a perfect 250-yard shot, dropping him in his tracks.

Early season buffalo hunting in the thick Camphor bush is not for the faint-hearted. Every step into that valley felt like stepping into the unknown — visibility measured in feet, adrenaline running high, and the knowledge that one mistake could turn the hunt in an instant.

For days we tracked this old dugga boy through some of the thickest country we’ve ever hunted. Mile after mile under the African sun, following tracks, reading sign, and staying locked in mentally and physically. After the first shot failed to hit the vitals, the hunt became even more intense. This old warrior tested us every step of the way, disappearing into the brush and keeping us on edge until the very last shot echoed through the valley.

Moments like these are what buffalo hunting is all about — raw, unpredictable, and earned the hard way. The exhaustion, the pressure, the close encounters… all of it made the ending that much more rewarding.

Respect to this incredible old bull for the fight he gave us, and salute to the privilege of hunting one of Africa’s toughest animals. 🐃🔥
