The pushup can be a great exercise for the core, spine and shoulder stability and more. However, when performed incorrectly over time can have adverse effects on the neck, shoulders, low back and more.

Maintain the natural alignment of your spine. Avoid:

letting your upper body sink between your shoulder blades
letting your head and neck drop forward
squeezing your glutes or pulling in your abdomen as these will alter the alignment of your spine

Releasing the latissimus dorsi muscle can help with shoulder tension, forward shoulder and back discomfort.

Please the release device like the in the area where your shoulder blade and arm come together at the backside of the armpit.

Bend your elbow with fingertips facing the ceiling. Use no more than 5% max effort to push your elbow into the floor. Inhale gently. As you exhale gently, release the contraction and allow your hand to float gently towards the ceiling. If this causes tension or discomfort in your shoulder or the tenderness is too much, instead of raising the arm, let the contraction relax and the muscle relaxes into the roller.
