Join us at LDYC for a fascinating presentation by military historian and author Simon C Green on the role of blockhouses during the Anglo-Boer War.

Discover how more than 9,000 blockhouses were built across South Africa during the war, how they operated, and the impact they had on the guerrilla campaign led by General Christiaan de Wet and Lord Kitchener’s counter-strategy.

With nearly 30 years of military experience and a passion for South African military history, Simon brings unique insight into this little-explored topic.

The best-known Anglo-Boer War blockhouse in the Vereeniging area is the Witkop Blockhouse, situated near the R59 between Johannesburg and Vereeniging. It is one of the few surviving British masonry blockhouses still standing in Gauteng today.

If you drive south from Johannesburg toward Vereeniging, you can still clearly see it from the highway near the Engen Blockhouse 1 Stop.

Our members, Wendy and Mike Doubell, recently enjoyed a wonderful weekend at R’new, celebrating their wedding anniversary. Set on the shores of the Vaal Dam, R’new offers a beautiful and tranquil setting, conveniently located between Deneysville and Oranjeville.

"The cottage is well-positioned close to the water and among a tranquil pecan grove. The overall atmosphere is calm and restorative - exactly what you’d hope for in a weekend getaway. Paul, the manager, was exceptionally accommodating and ensured that we felt welcome and looked after throughout the stay."
- Wendy

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape close to nature, R’new is well worth a visit. With the opportunity to attend World Labyrinth Day this Saturday, 2nd May, and stand a chance to win your own weekend stay for two, it’s the perfect time to experience it for yourself.

You can enter the draw at the venue.
Please note: You must be present at 12h30 to be eligible for the draw.

Join LDYC boaters as they set off at 11:00 to the R'new jetty in South Bay.

As the sun sets on the close of the Easter long weekend, we reflect on what a fantastic mini break it was at LDYC.

A huge thank you to Juan Marie and her team in The Galley for the delicious food, our bar staff, and Pieter and his team on the ground, ensuring everything ran smoothly.

👏 To all our volunteers—your time, energy, and willingness to step in wherever needed were much appreciated.

And of course, thank you to our members and their families, friends, and visitors who showed up and brought the great atmosphere - it wouldn’t be the same without you.

Here’s to more weekends like this at the club!

Welcome to our visitors from other clubs on the dam, who are joining us for Easter lunch.
