This weekend, thousands of runners will take on one of the greatest endurance challenges in the world – the Comrades Marathon!

To every athlete standing on that start line, we wish you strong legs when the miles get tough, strong minds when doubt creeps in, and big smiles as you cross that finish line.

Remember, every step forward is a victory. Trust your training, embrace the journey, and soak up every moment of this incredible experience.

Winter motivation is a funny thing...

At 5am, your running shoes look suspiciously uncomfortable, your warm bed suddenly becomes your best friend, and that snooze button starts making some very convincing arguments.

But remember, every winter kilometre earns double bragging rights! 💪❄️

The runners who keep showing up through frosty mornings, icy fingers and clouds of breath are building something special. Come spring, you'll be stronger, fitter and thanking your winter self for not hibernating like a bear.

So pull on that extra layer, grab a friend, and get out there. The hardest part is usually getting out the front door!

Keep moving, keep smiling, and remember: summer runners are made in winter. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🔥

Meet the hill that smiles politely… and then absolutely wrecks your life 😄

“Lung Buster” might look like just another bump in the road, but don’t be fooled — it’s got character, attitude, and a serious sense of humour. If you’re taking on the 21km, 35km or 50km at this year’s Titanic Challenge Trail Run, it’s time to start having some firm chats with your legs.
Tell them: “We’ve got this. Easy.”
Remind them: “We’ve never met a hill we can’t walk…”

And then prepare to be humbled.
This short stretch has a way of making strong runners question their life choices — but hey, that’s all part of the fun, right? One step at a time, big climbs, bigger views, and bragging rights at the top 💪

March Motivation....
Legends of the Trail: Oom Swannie & Tanie Marietjie

Some stories are woven into the very heart of the Titanic Challenge Trail Run — and oom Swannie and tannie Marietjie are one of them.

They have been part of the Titanic Challenge Trail Run since the very first event. In fact, they were the official sweepers on the 10km! Since then, this event has remained one of the highlights on their yearly calendar.

They came to retire in Clarens twelve years ago, drawn by one simple reason: the mountains. Their passion for hiking and the outdoors brought them here, and it continues to shape their daily lives.

At 81 and 78 years young, oom Swannie and tannie Martietjie are still strong, healthy, and active. They hike almost every day, and at least once every two weeks they head over the mountain. Oom Swannie especially enjoys longer distance trails, often setting off on his own to spend quiet time in nature — something that continues to inspire us all.

They are also familiar faces at the Clarens Parkrun every Saturday — not only participating in the 5km, but regularly volunteering.

For them, the Titanic Challenge Trail Run is more than just a trail run. It’s the spirit of Clarens. It’s the energy, the community, and the joy of seeing people come together to experience the beautiful trails our mountains have to offer.

They remind us that age is just a number — but passion for nature keeps you forever young.

We are honoured to have them as part of the Titanic family. 💙⛰️

Behind every breathtaking climb, winding single track and golden Free State sunset in Clarens is a team of legends quietly doing the hard graft 💚

The Clarens Village Conservancy works year-round to protect and maintain the trails and natural environment in and around our village. From trail clearing and alien plant removal to erosion control and environmental education — they’re the reason our mountains stay wild, beautiful and accessible.

And here’s the powerful part…

When you enter the SPAR Titanic Challenge Trail Run, you don’t just run for the medal.
You run for a reason.

Monies raised through the Titanic Challenge directly support the Conservancy rangers and an incredible group of dedicated Clarens community volunteers who make all of this possible.

Because of your entries over the past few years, we’ve been able to:

🌿 Complete Phase 1 of the first (and only!) wheelchair-friendly route in Clarens
🌿 Permanently employ more rangers to maintain and protect our trail network
🌿 Build bridges across key sections
🌿 Eradication of invasive species
🌿 Implement water runoff systems and erosion prevention
🌿 Launch an educational trail with beautiful signboards sharing information about the fauna, flora and fascinating geological features of the Conservancy

Every step you take on race day helps preserve these mountains for future generations.

🔥 Red Hairy Heath – The Fiery Star of 2026 🔥

For the 2026 running top of the Titanic Challenge Trail Run, we’ve chosen a flower as tough and tenacious as our runners — the Red Hairy Heath, lovingly known as Morita-nkoe (Sesotho) or Rooihartjie (Afrikaans).

From the hardy slopes round Clarens, where it clings bravely to rocky sandstone cliffs, this little redhead thrives in cool grassland vegetation — just like the landscapes we run through. An indigenous garden simply isn’t complete without this fiery beauty lighting up a corner with its deep red, tubular blooms.

Part of the Ericaeae (Heath family), it’s often called “Fire Heath” — and for good reason. It’s one of the rare ericas that resprouts after fire. In fact, fire keeps it strong, healthy, and flowering freely. (Sound familiar, trail runners? 😉)

🌺 What makes it special?
It bursts into full bloom from late May through June and continues flowering right through winter — even dusted in snow. Not invincible to severe frost, but resilient enough to shine when most others retreat.

Just like the runners of the Titanic Challenge, the Red Hairy Heath doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. It thrives in the wild, stands tall after hardship, and brings colour to the coldest season.

Wear it with pride in 2026. 🌄🔥
