Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a perennial herb native to North America.

🌿 Basic Facts

Scientific name: Actaea racemosa (formerly Cimicifuga racemosa)

Common names: Black snakeroot, bugbane, fairy candle

Part used: Root and rhizome

Active compounds: Triterpene glycosides (e.g., actein), phenolic acids, and flavonoids.

⚙️ How It Works

Not a true phytoestrogen: It doesn’t act directly like estrogen but may affect serotonin receptors and regulate the hypothalamus (which controls temperature and hormones).

Possible estrogen-modulating effect on the brain, not directly on estrogen receptors in the uterus or breast — making it safer than some estrogenic herbs.

Supports hormone balance by acting on the hypothalamus and serotonin receptors, which help regulate body temperature and mood.

May have a modest effect on LH (luteinizing hormone), which spikes during hot flashes.

Doesn’t appear to stimulate estrogen-sensitive tissues (like the uterus or breasts), which is why it’s considered safer than soy isoflavones or phytoestrogens.

🍞🥣 A carb-heavy meal—like cereal, toast, and juice—is essentially all sugar.

💉 Your body responds with an insulin dump to bring sugar levels down

🚫 But that halts fat burning
