Praxis Coaching

Praxis Coaching While earning a fancy shmancy psych degree, I discovered how much of this old form of talk therapy did not sit well with my beliefs. But don’t worry!

Something about sitting with a client months after months, rehashing the same story, problem or trauma seemed rather ridiculous (no offence to all the amazing psychologists out there!). While this may work for some, I slowly discovered that many people just weren’t getting the results they wanted or at least not as quickly as they would like. And I couldn’t understand how focusing on the problem o

r on the past for such a long time could really transform a person’s life. And that’s what I believe in – a transformation. Not a suppressing of a past experience, problem or negative emotion. I also believe there is a better, faster and more long-lasting ways of getting over these traumas, beliefs and problems. With the pressures of day-to-day life in what seems to be a rather unforgiving world, we tend to focus on the things we don’t have, the things that are wrong with our lives, and the things we fear to our very core. Our focus on these things are so strong and habitual that it becomes more and more difficult to see that we actually possess the power change and create a better lives for ourselves. I believe this so strongly that I embarked on a journey to prove this belief to the world. My belief took me on an amazing journey, which I am still on today. And I am so happy and excited to bring everything that I am passionate about and everything that I have learned to you. I know that if I can change my life for the better, that you can too. You don’t have to do it alone. I am here to help, support and guide you. It’s time to stop having life happen to you, and take control to make life happen.

Parp.

How are your plates looking at the moment?

My "house" plate is taking most of my time and attention at the moment, what with all the building work to project manage. Pretty much everything else is wobbling drastically, whilst diet and fitness has smashed into smithereens around my feet!

Show the ♥️

This is the world’s first ever magnetic resonance image showing a mother and child’s bond.
The image is of neuroscientist Rebecca Saxe kissing her two month old son.

The child’s brain appears to be smoother and darker. This is because it has significantly less white matter. White matter is comprised of myelin, which is fatty tissue that acts as insulation for the wires that communicate messages inside your brain.

The activations in the image do not refer to the act of kissing but to the organisation of functional activity in infant brains when viewing meaningful images.

Kissing causes a chemical reaction in your brain, including a burst of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is often referred to as the ‘love hormone’ because it stirs up feelings of affection and attachment.

Kissing activates the brain’s reward system; releasing dopamine which makes us feel good. It also releases vasopressin which bonds mothers with babies and romantic partners to each other. It also releases serotonin which helps to regulate our mood.

Alissa’s Q: I recently made the commitment to myself to start getting active and healthy, but so far it is just not working out. I was doing great for a couple weeks, then I had a major issue at work that caused me to work late every night, and now I am back to the same old unhealthy routines I was before. This always seems to happen and I feel so defeated never being able to stick to my goals. Please Help!

A: Alissa girl, you are not alone! Everyone can relate to exactly what happened to you here - We start out great, then something happens or we loose steam, and revert back to how we were before. Here are some quick tips to help you get back on track, and stay there!

Tip 1: Clearly define your goal - keep it small and simple. In other words simply saying “I want to get more fit and healthy” is way too broad and overwhelming. Just choose one aspect for now you can build on to it from there. An example could be “I will take lunch with me to work so that I don’t head down to the local Mc D’s for a burger everyday” or “after work I will walk my dogs for 45mins”. Bonus if you schedule these tasks in!

Tip 2: Create a Cue (reminder) to alert you to getting started on your goal. Keep the cue the same everyday - you are starting to create a habit!

Tip 3: Have a reward for yourself! This could be packing a small chocolate in with your lunch or indulging in some well earned T.V. time after your walk. Again, keep your reward the same to help round off making this new habit.

Tip 4: When you go off track, try sit down with yourself to understand how and what you are feeling, what is making you feel this way, and how you can positively respond to this without falling into the destructive mindset of “eff this” and giving up completely.

I hope this helps Alissa! If you have anymore questions or unsure about anything I’ve mentioned here, just leave a comment below and I will do my best to get back to you!

If you have any more tips tricks or words of encouragement for Alissa - be sure to leave them below!

Today’s message is a quote from Sean Covey, successful businessman, speaker and author. His father was Steven Covey who wrote the famous book “7 habits of highly effective people.”

In this quote he states “We are what we repeatedly do”. It is a great reminder to take a look at our everyday habits and practices to make sure they are inline with our greater goals and wants in life. Everyday is one small step. Each small action we take today, adds up to one big result in the future.

Are your daily habits moving you towards or away from the life you want? What needs changing? What small thing can you do everyday to move you closer the the things you want?

This weeks message “Caregiver” is taken from the Spirit Messages Oracle by John Holland:

“We are with you, and Spirit has its own way of recognizing the care and love you provide to others, especially at the end of their lives, just as you received care and love at the start of your life. Caregivers often focus all their attention on their loved ones and often neglect their own concerns and well-being in the process.

You have chosen this card in all likelihood because you probably already are or have been in a caretaker role, or you’ll shortly start caring for someone you love. This card is a timely reminder to ensure you don’t forget yourself in the process. No matter what type of care is being given, whether it is emotional support or more hands-on, it’s easy to let all your energy dissipate, leaving you feeling drained, disinterested, or at times feeling down.

Remember that we’re all made up of energy and that energy is very precious and delicate, and needs to be preserved and honored. Take time for yourself. Nurture yourself with self-care — such as massage, meditation, or walks in nature — allowing your body, mind, and spirit to open and absorb positive and healthy energy so that when you have to return to care mode, you feel healthy, strong, and revitalized.”

In his garden, a man found a cocoon of a butterfly.
One day a small opening appeared in the cocoon.
He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole.
Then it stopped, as if it couldn’t go further.

Seeing this, the man decided to help the butterfly.
He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bits of the cocoon.
The butterfly emerged easily but it had a swollen body and shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch it, expecting that at any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body of the butterfly, but nothing happened.
In fact the butterfly spent the rest of its short life crawling around, never being able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand of the butterfly is that the restricting cocoon and the struggle
required by the butterfly to get through the opening was a way of forcing the fluid from the body into the wings so that it would be ready for flight once it had freed itself from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives.
Going through life with no obstacles would mean we have nothing to grow and learn from. We will not be as strong as we could have been and just like the butterfly, we would never learn to fly.

As parents we can do this to our kids as well. Well intentioned help restricts opportunities for growth and learning. Take a beat, step back and let your little make mistakes so that one day they can spread their strong wings and fly.
