ISR Marelize - Infant Swimming

ISR Marelize - Infant Swimming Aquatic Self-Rescue Lessons for children between 6 months and 6 years of age Children may begin lessons at 6 months of age until 6 years of age.

Infant Swimming Resource’s Self-Rescue survival swimming program is a 6-8 week course, scheduled 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day. With a focus on safe, customized, one-on-one lessons by certified Instructors, ISR’s survival swimming lessons emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations and parent education to deliver the most effective and safest results in the indu

stry. Lessons for a 6-12 month old focus on teaching the child to roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and to be able to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives. Lessons for children 1-6 years old focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down; roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe; and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued. Once the children are fully skilled they will practice ISR’s survival techniques fully clothed during lessons. It is recommended that children complete refresher lessons to help their in-water skill level grow with their physical development.

🐟How incredibly cute is this little 3 year old girl!? She says "Cheese" whenever she sees my camera 🥰 After just one week of lessons, she already has a stable swim and can roll onto her back (with very little assistance) and remains in a floating posture to catch her breath.
THIS is why we love what we do - teaching babies and young children how to Self-Rescue in an Aquatic Emergency. 🐠

Another FAQ to help you as you research swim lesson options for your family! 🤔🫶

Children like routine & familiarity, so their Certified ISR Instructor will not be surprised or bothered when they fuss in the initial days or weeks of lessons given the new environment and new person they are being handed to! Thankfully, we find that this behavior typically tapers off as they begin to build trust & a rapport with us and as they feel more confident in their skills 💪

While it’s tempting to hold out for a magical “no cry” method to swimming or to wait until your child is older with the hope that they will cry less, keep in mind that they are the most vulnerable to drowning between the ages of 1-4. Our swim parents will tell you that any tears are a worthy trade-off for the priceless self-rescue skills they will learn!

One of the most common scenarios we see is someone going out to try to rescue a friend or family member who is drowning and then they end up drowning as well. Why?

Because the drowning person is desperate to get air and their basic instinct for survival kicks in, so when some well-meaning person comes to help them but doesn’t know how to properly do so, the drowning person will grab the rescuer and pull on them to try to get up and get air. This is too much for the rescuer to overcome and they end up drowning as well.

Make sure you know how to get yourself out of a situation like this. Make sure your kids know how to do it too. You can’t help someone else if they are causing you to drown too. Just remember “Suck, Tuck, Duck”.

To avoid this situation entirely:

Instead of going in and trying to rescue a person by grabbing them, throw something to them that floats or if they are close enough, use something long like a branch, pole or a rope that they can hold onto while you pull them to safety. We call this “Reach or Throw but don’t Go”.

This one is for the books! 🤣
Sometimes, Grannies are the BEST supporters! This gorgeous Granny (well into her 70's) decided to jump in, fully clothed, to show our students that she can do it too! 🤣
Needless to say, she earned an ISR medal and we couldn't be more proud!! 🤩🏅

Real talk: If your child still needs a flotation device after swim lessons to be independent in the pool, they can’t truly swim. What’s more dangerous than a child who can’t swim, is a child who thinks they can. 😞 ISR can help!

We are the global leader in survival swim lessons for children age 6 mos - 6 years old. Our highly trained instructors will empower your child with real skills in weeks, not years! Swim lessons don’t have to be underwhelming, they can be unbelievable ✨

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children age 1-4, so water safety needs to be high on the list of priorities for parents everywhere. While survival skills are only one piece of the puzzle, it is incredible to see your child empowered with the ability to find air ❤️ A smile when they do is pretty awesome too! 🥹

In addition to skills, your layers of protection near water should include arms-reach supervision, barriers at access points leading to water and around the water itself, and knowledge of CPR.

Many of my swim families had the privilege to have met Anneliza van der Schyff. We worked together in the same pool for years before she emigrated to the USA in 2022.
Today our hearts are shattered.💔
Anneliza has lost her long battle with cancer.
Thank you for all the little lives that you saved, Anneliza. Every kid that you touched, magically transformed into a Mermaid or Aquaman. You were an incredible ISR instructor. You saved so many lives. But no one could save yours.
We were business partners and dear friends for many years. It was an honor to have spent hours in the pool with you every day. We shared unforgettable moments and would laugh afterwards about silly and funny things our students had said or done during the day.
We survived wearing masks in the pool during Covid, struggling to breathe at times when it got wet. The battle you faught was much bigger than that.
I miss you, Anneliza. I miss our chats and I miss hearing your voice. You were an inspiration to many kids and their families. Thank you for the honor of being your friend.
Our sincere condolences to Anneliza's children and grandchildren. Anneliza lived for her family. Not a day went by when she didn't talk about any of them. They carried her.
Sail safe and far, Captain Anneliza! You will be remembered.
