I've just been fitted with a brand new set of Rudy Project frames, and I am beyond excited. 🙌

But here's what makes my setup truly one of a kind...These are not standard sports lenses. These are not standard prescription lenses. These lenses were custom engineered and purpose-built for me, for my specific needs, and for the precise way I present my weapon to the target and whether that's handgun, rifle, or shotgun.

The man behind the magic? Dr Herman Smit, optometrist based in Brooklyn, Pretoria. Dr Smit went to extraordinary lengths to develop a lens solution that most people would never even think to do...a prescription tailored specifically around my shooting style and technique.

5 Jaar gelede...

Dit was 22 April 2021.

Ek is gevra om te help met die eskort van 'n voertuig wat hoëwaarde items vervoer het. Lloyd Mtombeni was saam met my. Dit was sy vierde dag by daardie maatskappy.

Minute na ons vertrek het, het die eerste skote geklap.

Meer as een voertuig. 'n Klomp gewapende manne. Meer as 30 skote wat ons Land Cruiser tref.

Ek moes die voertuig op sy wiele hou — as dit omslaan, is ons in 'n baie slegter posisie.

My instinkte het ingeskop. Dit is wat ons mense leer — visualiseer vooraf wat jy gaan doen. Dit is 'n ingesteldheid. En dit is wat gebeur het. Ek het gedoen wat my kop my gesê het om te doen, en daardie dag het dit uitgewerk.

Ek wil iets duidelik maak oor Lloyd.
Mense het hom gekritiseer. Keyboard warriors het gesê hy het nie genoeg gedoen nie. Dit is onaanvaarbaar. Lloyd was op sy vierde dag. Dit was die eerste keer in sy lewe dat hy in 'n voertuig geskiet is. Die beste ding wat hy kon doen was om nie te panic nie — en dit het hy gedoen. Hy het kalm gebly sodat ek kon konsentreer. Hy het gedoen wat ek van hom gevra het. Vir 'n man op sy vierde dag was hy uitsonderlik.

Ons het beide daardie aand huis toe gegaan.

Daarvoor is ek dankbaar.

Maar hier is wat ek nie wil hê mense moet vergeet nie.
'n Week na my insident is 'n persoon in 'n soortgelyke aanval en geskiet. Geen viral video nie. Geen mediadekking nie. Net nog 'n gesin wat iemand verloor het.
Die regte helde is die voltydse CIT werkers. Hulle doen dit dag na dag, sonder die erkenning.

My situasie was nie 'n uitsondering nie — dit is die werklikheid op Suid-Afrika se paaie elke dag.

En dit bring my by die vraag wat elke werkgewer moet vra.
Is jou mense werklik opgelei, of word hulle net die veld in gestuur?
Ek het maatskappye gesien wat hul mense letterlik voor die leeus gooi. Hulle stel aan met die minimum kwalifikasies omdat hulle agter wins aan is. Dalk een kwalifiserende opleiding per jaar — en dan stuur hulle daai man op pad met 'n vuurwapen en 'n gebed. Dit is nie opleiding nie. Dit is 'n vonnis.

Opleiding red lewens. Dit het my lewe gered. Dit het Lloyd se lewe gered.

Leo Prinsloo — Calm Under Fire

Former Captain Leo Prinsloo of the South African Police Service Special Task Force—an elite unit often compared to the SAS—built his career in the world’s most dangerous operations. He protected high-profile leaders, including two U.S. presidents and the Queen of England.

After leaving the force, he became a tactical instructor, later taking part-time work as an armed cash-in-transit es**rt in Pretoria.

On April 22, 2021, that experience was put to the ultimate test.

While driving along the N4 highway, Prinsloo’s armored vehicle was ambushed by a heavily armed gang. Gunfire erupted. Vehicles closed in. It was a coordinated, high-speed attack.

Prinsloo didn’t panic. He acted.

He maneuvered through traffic with precision, evading gunfire, ramming one of the attackers’ vehicles, and pushing through the chaos. Bullets struck the armored glass, but he stayed focused—getting himself and his partner out of the kill zone.

When the vehicle finally came to a stop, he didn’t retreat.

He grabbed his rifle, stepped out, and prepared to fight back.

Seeing him ready to engage, the attackers broke. They fled—empty-handed.

His partner, Lloyd Mtombeni, was on just his fourth day on the job.

The dashcam footage spread across the world, watched by tens of millions. To many, it was a display of extraordinary courage and composure under fire.

But Prinsloo saw it differently.

He downplayed everything, saying the real heroes are the full-time cash-in-transit crews who face that danger every single day.

And maybe that says the most about him.
