A non-test-driven armoured vehicle is not an add-on to your team's protection.

The driver and all other passengers need to have full confidence in the vehicle before they start any journey....

That confidence doesn't come from a badge or a sales pitch. It comes from route planning, vehicle checks, equipment checks, comms checks and every member of the team actually knowing how the vehicle handles, not just trusting that it will.

Armoured vehicles behave very differently from their soft skin counterparts, and that's exactly why training can't be overemphasized...

Four weeks ago I test drove an armoured ambulance on a Toyota 79 series chassis. Early on, I could feel something wasn't quite right, the handling was more of a fight than it should have been, more body roll than I was comfortable putting a crew through.

I flagged it. ASC looked into it, found the cause and fixed it. A few days later I was back behind the wheel and the difference was night and day. Smooth through the slalom, confident through the off-road track, no white-knuckle moments over uneven ground.

That's the part that actually matters to me. Not the fix itself, but that when something didn't feel right, it got taken seriously and sorted before that vehicle ever reaches a driver or a crew trusting it with their life.

But having said that... Nothing beats good old common sense (ja ja, I know, common sense is not a flower that grows in everybody's backyard).

If you drive within the limitations of the vehicle and your own ability, and adapt to the surface and the environment in front of you, that's what actually gives you peace of mind. Not the vehicle alone.

Die waarheid? Onder regte lewensgevaar gaan jou liggaam dinge doen waaroor jy geen beheer het nie.

Jou hartklop skiet binne sekondes van 70 na 150+ slae per minuut. Op daardie punt is jou fyn motoriese vaardighede (die klein, presiese bewegings – dink safety, korrekte greep-aanpassings, trigger squeeze) grootliks weg.

Jy kry tonnelvisie. Jou gehoor verdof. Jou hande bewe. Jou mond is droog. Dis nie swakheid nie... dis biologie. Dis jou liggaam se "body alarm reaction."

En hier's die ding, onder daardie druk val jy terug op net een ding – muscle memory. Nie wat jy onthou nie, wat jy oor en oor gedoen het totdat dit outomaties geword het.☝️

Dis presies hoekom fundamentele opleiding nie 'n opsie is nie, dit is die basis waarop alles anders staan.🙌

What a privilege that was! 🫡

A few weeks back at Dave Sheer Guns in the Western Cape... hands down one of the best ranges in the Western Cape 🔫

Got to run a basic handgun refresher session with none other than Zola Budd... yes, THE Zola Budd, the legend who showed the world how fast a human being can run... barefoot, no less.

Now I have to admit, she still runs faster than I can react on the range, but after that session I can safely say her shooting is catching up to her running. That's a high bar to live up to!🫡
