When someone is injured, the instinct to “do something” can be incredibly strong. Good first aid is about doing what is appropriate and avoiding actions that could cause further harm.
Sometimes helping means controlling bleeding. Sometimes it means supporting and reassuring someone while you wait for emergency services. And sometimes it means not moving an injured person unnecessarily.
On World Patient Safety Day, we recognise that keeping a patient safe begins long before they reach a hospital.
First aid training gives ordinary people the knowledge to provide appropriate initial care, recognise their limitations and protect a patient until professional medical help takes over.
